Think my reliable old hp g61 is nearly done.

All I use it for it a few car diagnostic programs, internet & the odd bit of word processing.

Looking for good value for money, something that I will get a few years from.

Also was wondering if saveonlaptops is still the best place to purchase from?

    Thanks

What makes you think the G61 is on the way out? Some HP laptops from a few years back had overheating issues, and you'd probably need to do an almost complete disassembly to de-fluff and re-paste, but tell us more. I'd say its still capable of doing what you need.

Screen flickers every now & again? Quite annoying. I re-pasted the cpu a few years back & cleaned out the fan, been a while since though, due to laziness. :P
Only put a new screen on a few months back, maybe a poor screen is causing my problems?

    saveonlaptops still very good.

    also there's this.

I bought and upgraded the ram on one of these for a friend.

there was a big thread on them.

not available as buy it now on ebay anymore but only auction. I won a grade a one for 103 sterling. you can upgrade the ram yourself in 20 minutes. 25 sterling for 8gb.

will easily do what you need in a nice 14 inch size with a decent keyboard.

I've never bought from them but compu-zone.ie do refurbished business laptops for reasonable money. Many of them have ssd's installed and would be good quality if you get a thinkpad or something similar.

Like I said I've no experience of buying from them so I've no idea what their customer service is like but I came across their site and they seem to have good stuff at good prices.

a lot of the stuff on there seems very old - machines that are 4/5 years old with old-gen processors. so it might say core i5 but it will be an old one. I notice that they don't the chip model number - obviously deliberate. e.g. modern core i5 on a laptop will go to 3mhz with a good battery life, the ones from a few years ago could be half that speed with terrible battery life efficiency and with older supporting technology i.e. the integrated graphics, bus speed, ram used etc.

+1, and I would be concerned of the quality of the SSD's they install in these machines too.

Well guys, never bought a laptop after, been borrowing from my sister. Looking for something for web browsing, small bit of word, car diagnostics etc. Nothing too fancy needed, max screen size of 14". Something good value for money that should do me a good few years!

Thinking of going for the Lenovo ideapad that's on sale in Currys at the moment. Good value for money?

    this one?
    http://www.currys.ie/Product/lenovo-ideapad-320s14ikb-14-laptop-grey/346520/401.10

yes, probably the best deal out there at the moment.

    ticks all the boxes
    1080p screen
    good quad-core i5 cpu
    ssd (although small)
    8gb ram
good balance between size and usabiilty
    good value at 580

If you're in the market for a laptop pick it up before the deal is over

The ssd is quiet small here, is it possible to add more memory?

you could buy a bigger ssd yourself if needed.
it also has a memory card reader so you could add a 128gb card for storing files.
