How to get a brushed white finish?

Hi folks,

We've bought a house which has a pretty dated looking kitchen. I'm thinking of just getting a new counter top, sink and refinishing the cupboards.

I'd like to get a matt brushed white finish. How is this done? The finish in mind is a very matt, light white finish where I can see the texture of the wood. It's not quite whitewashed or picked white that I want - these look too grey. I want a matt white finish where the wood grain comes through, but you don't see the wood itself if you know what I mean.

Is there a proper name for this finish? How do I do it? Perhaps I think the white paint a little?

Its called white oiling, if you are using real wood you can get white oil from Ikea and wipe it on to give that effect, Behandla is the name that Ikea use.
I think Limed is another description for the look.

Ah, interesting - it seems to be linseed oil with a pigment - nice and natural.

I do like this but it's not exactly what I was thinking of. This is close:

With this finish I'm thinking of, when you look close, you can see the grain of the wood - it's not completely opaque, but it's not as "transparent" as the oil finish either. More like a light full white finish

I'd call into a local small paint supplier and ask them, if anyone will know its a specialist paint shop.
