Geode hunting, any tips for a novice?

    Hello All,

Has anyone had any luck finding geodes with crystal formations inside in Ireland? I've taken an interest in them recently and I was thinking of trying to find some (well a bit of quartz for a start) and I'm hoping some good folk in here can point me in the right direction.

I'm a complete novice so forgive the questions below if they appear to be naive.

Do I have to dig to find them or could I just root around in a rocky patch?

I'll be looking for them in the Wexford area, we've a fair bit of quartz around the place so I'm hoping that's an indicator. Are they more prevalent in other parts of the country?

Is it true that they rattle? Does anyone have any other identification tips?

    Thanks.
