Desktop Icons changing/spacing

    I have transfered to a new computer running Win 7 Ultimate. I was previously on Win 7 Home.
    I used to be able to change the icons on the desktop (I have a folder of my regularly used icons). I can't seem to do it any more.
    Presently desktop icons that are shortcuts have a large 'shortcut' imposed upon the icon.
    Anybody got an idea about how I might get back to my old display?
    Neither can I find out how to get to the 'Icon spacing Vertical/Horizontal' menu.

    I thanked mp22 rather hastily. It was certainly the very answer that I had saught - to the second part of my question.

    I still require assistance with the main problem.

    Not being too sure about how the questions and answers work I posted my question again in the 'Quick Reply'.
    Thereafter, I once again checked the 'History' section.
    I came accross 'http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3606-shortcut-arrow-change-remove-restore.html'.
    I sure pays to check back.
    The tutorial took a bit of trial and error - but I now have the Desktop Icons as I want them.
    Thanks to mp22 and to any others who may have given thought to my post.
