or maybe it's the channel entitled: IRISH TV in HD format?

This channel claims it will launch on the Saorview platform during 2016 although, they have not stated when exactly or in what format (in SD or HD)

I presume Sky are the reason for that.

Even the SD picture on Sky is woeful, switched to Saorview for the match last night and there was a very noticeable improvement in picture quality.

It is a shame that RTE are the only broadcasters available in HD on Saorview.

In fact, that is a disgrace.

Some extra test channels on Saorsat at the moment. Hopefully this is a good sign for possible new channels

Are there capacity or cost issues or what's holding it up? Countries sent men to the moon in less time.

It's now almost 3.5 years since 4 main channels were available in HD on all platforms in UK. IIRC this happened at DSO. Why is ROI taking so long to have TV3/TG4 in HD on all platforms?

There's some rigmarole about the cost, which has been discussed and debated on here many times and cited as the main barrier to TV3/TG4/UTVI going HD.

Someone needs to just step in and sort it all out - cos it is a bit of a joke.

This situation has arisen because of the dislike/distaste that the FG government and the Dept have for RTE and the wish to clip their wings.

RTE NL/2RN have been prevented from charging a proper way for DTV, and were forced into the stupid idea that broadcasters had to pay per Mbyte transmitted, instead of defining the minimum bandwidth required to transmit channels. As a result we have fuzzy-vision on TV3, and TG4. The result of this is that for one channel to go HD costs €2.5m while it would only cost €1.6m if all three secondary channels went HD. It would be less if the Oreachtas paid the proper rate for OTV, instead of paying Sky.

In fact the nonsense of our Oreachtas refusing to put the debates of the Dail FTA on the nations DTV service (but pays a foreign TV service to put it behind a pay wall) says a lot about the contempt the politicians have for the people and democracy - but we know all about that given we now have a Provisional Government 100 years after the first one.

RTE are also prevented from moving Children's TV off RTE 2 while being forced to run RTE jr advert free on the children's dedicated channel. RTE are also forced to run RTE NewsNow advert free, and so it is a crap news channel with most broadcasts being simulcasts with RTE One, or repeats.

Currently nearly 50% of Saorview bandwidth is burnt off in test cards and zeros.

Tend to agree with this as my TG4 picture from NI Mini-mux (Ch. 39 Black Mountain) seems better than TG4 on Saorview (Ch. 52 Clermont Carn).

The three channels (TG4, RTÉ1 & RTÉ2) on the RNI1 (formerly NIMM) multiplex have a picture resolution of 720 x 576 each. TG4 on Soarview however is 544 x 576. It also helps that the channels on the RNI1 mux would be running with an average video bitrate of ~3Mb/s with MPEG4 compression (i.e. same as Saorview).

You'd notice the difference in resolution on TG4 particularly with captions that use solid contrasting colours e.g. on news reports or sport scoreboards. On the NIMM they are visibly more sharply defined, whereas on Saorview they are more blurred.

Thanks for very clear explanation. Glad to have the alternative of NIMM.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge.....but what / where is the RNI1 (formerly NIMM). Thanks in advance for updating me! :o

It's the regional mux in NI that carries RTÉ1/2, TG4 and RnaG that launched back in Oct 2012. RTÉ pay it own costs for the mux, TG4 carriage costs are paid for by the UK government as part of the Goof Friday agreement.

There are 3 transmitters who carry RNI1 - Black Mountain (West Belfast); Carnmoney (North Belfast) and Brougher Mountain (Co. Tyrone). All channels are SD only. Quite a lot of RTE's sporting content is geo-blocked e.g. CL/ROI soccer internationals as well as some entertainment programmes e.g. Home and Away.

Checked this morning, the picture quality on TG 4 from Belfast is better than the one from Clermont. Madness! Also, TG 4 is still broadcasting on one of the test channels on Saorview, but even it doesn't look as good a quality as the one from Belfast at least not going by the graphics on screen.

Is the test of TG 4 still a HD test? Is it ever going to launch?

There hasn't been a TG4 HD test for ages. I think it only lasted for one night?

But yeah, TG4 in NI is 720x576 while it's 544x576 on Saorview. Absolute madness.

A point to note, carriage of TG4 on the NImux is paid for by the UK government as part of the Good Friday agreement.

Regarding the HD test broadcast on LCN14, we don't know the purpose of it, maybe just filling mux space.

Slightly off-topic, red button active on TG4 tonight - https://www.saorview.ie/en/news

Absolutely. Was watching the Dublin v Kerry match last Sunday & it looked atrocious. All five main UK channels will soon be HD and we are stuck with this 3rd rate rubbish. Its the digital equivalent of the 405 line broadcast era.

How can Red Button coverage be accessed on a non Saorview approved box, ie no red button?

we need to know what LCN it is on and manually add it .. depending on what your set up is ..

Anyone know what the LCN is/will be?

I just did a scan and can't find anything new.

It'll be carried on one of the blank placeholders. You'll just have to flick through them all when the time is right.
I'm sure it will be reported here, so keep an eye on this forum.

Any idea how you record red button on Saorview? Last time it was on (Connacht vs Ospreys) I tried to both manually record and timer record on my PVR but the main TG4 programme recorded instead. When red button is on Freeview it can be accessed via a separate channel (601) but this does not seem to be the case with Freeview. BTW I live in N. Ireland and I'm using a Panasonic Freeview HD PVR with Saorview channels in the 800's.

Edit: Red button channel here in NI for Freeview HD TVs/STBs/PVRS is 825.
