If Mick Dawson needs me to tell him that better underage coaching, development processes & pathways, talent identification and skill development is what leinster rugby needs..

More sarcasm, interesting that you ignore all the other points and waste your time with this.

Not sure why people get so defensive around this topic, it's clear as day leinster are underperforming in this area and that it needs addressing.

Surely you can see the humour in saying the answer is "better coaching"

You should also pop down to Munster and tell Axel that Munster need to play better rugby and they'll start winning.

maybe people are fed up hearing you post the same stuff over and over, and over and over again. You offer plenty of criticism of whats wrong but little of substance to fix these 'wrongs' other then more money and better coaching.

My belief is that the academy is being reactive instead of proactive in developing players. There now seems to be a much greater emphasis on backs in the current academy which I presume is to offset the need.

But this is fire fighting. The reason I suggest that the academy be expanded is to put a stop to this constant fire fighting and just develop players on the basis of what is there rather than what is needed. Granted this will produce a greater amount of 'wastage' but all the provinces could benefit from this after Leinster pick the cream of the crop.

Before anyone asks, I've no 'proof' that the players are there other than the coincidental increase in intake in certain positions when they are needed. To look at the academy graduates over the last few years is to see those peaks and troughs in different positions and these can be compared almost exactly with the needs of the senior squad. Unfortunately there is a time lag between the need developing and the players arriving which points to poor planning.

I see Ian Madigan went to Barbados this week.

But every discussion runs its course, every time I drop by there is a list of players and years beside them. At this stage its just circular, same people saying the same things.

Indeed, the Indo really do know how to fill column inches with absolutely nothing of interest. They really are desperate for rugby players and their partners to be of interest off the pitch.

They need something to fill in on those rare days that the BOD/Amy correspondent is off.

Players through the academy born since 1990.

    With Leinster next season:
    Scrumhalf: Luke McGrath[1993] - Leinster
    Outhalf: Cathal Marsh[1992] - Leinster
    Centre: Noel Reid[1990] - Leinster
    Centre: Tom Daly[1993] - Leinster
    Centre: Garry Ringrose[1995] - Leinster
    Wing: Adam Byrne[1994] - Leinster

    Elsewhere:
    Scrumhalf: John Cooney[1990] - Connacht
    Outhalf/Centre: Steve Crosbie[1993] - ?
    Centre: Colm O'Shea[1991] - ?
    Centre: Brendan Macken[1991] - Wasps
    Centre: Tom Farrell[1993] - ?
    Wing/Fullback: Darren Hudson[1990] - ?
    Wing: Andrew Boyle[1991] - AIL
    Wing/Fullback: Andrew Conway[1991] - Munster
    Wing: Sam Coghlan Murray[1992] - ?
    Fullback: Billy Dardis[1995] - ?

    Players left in academy:
    Scrumhalf: Nick McCarthy[1995]
    Scrumhalf: Charlie Rock[1995]
    Outhalf: Ross Byrne[1995]
    Outhalf: Joey Carbery[1995]

    Wing: Ian Fitzpatrick[1994]
    Wing: Rory O'Loughlin[1994]

    +
    new academy backs
Which is 6 through and 10 out, nearly 2:1 as I said.

Can you count the likes of John Cooney as 'out'? He got a senior contract and then MOC pretty much dumped him in Connacht (Connacht are very happy about that). He should really still be with Leinster imo.

In the last three years it was 6 out of 23 that left. Slightly over a quarter (or 3:1). One of those had a career ending injury.

Of course you can, he never pushed on to the senior team for whatever reason and is unlikely to return to Leinster.

Again the province has been producing forwards and not backs all decade. Going into next season Leinster's academy will have produced one 1st choice back from 16 players coming through the academy, possibly two if Luke McGrath holds off the 3rd string NZer.

Over the rest of the decade it will have to produce at least three more 1st choice players - Outhalf, Fullback, Wing. Along with some good backups at 10, 12, wing x2.

Maybe that 10 is either Ross Byrne or Joey Carbery, that Wing is Adam Byrne or Cian Kelleher and the fullback has yet to join the academy. Or maybe will fail to develop them and NIQ's will be looked for. Given the recent track record it's likely the NIQ route if allowed.

This is what happens when you don't qualify for the quarters in europe.

in part because of the lack of quality backs being produced by the academy and underage system..

Actually that is starting to become a lot more interesting for some reason.

This is getting tedious. Perhaps you should start a thread specifically about the Leinster Academy

Nothing stoping you from not reading it or starting your own discussion.

  • Do we get a new jersey next season anyone?

I reckon its time to go counter-cultural (aka hipster) and get away from those functional tight yokes that were first seen in Cool Runnings.

    Back to these days please
    Bod,%20Brian%20O'%20Meara%20and%20Brian%20O'%20Driscoll%20Celtic%20League%20final%202001.jpg

    Thoughts anyone?

    Anyone?
