    Folks,
Just heard back from VW - it will be another week before they can sort the locks out :/
I am thinking of changing for an older model car, for a number of reasons.
Could I ask those who have very young kids/babies, does a 3 door cause a hell of a lot of issues? If I got one, would I curse it everytime, or is it not as bad as people say?

I had a 3 door GTI... and chopped it in for the 5 door R when the little one was about 4 months old. The 3 door was a pain in the arse tbh. The access to the rear seat from the front door just isn't great at all and the roof line is low. You'll be banging your head and scuffing the door and trim with the baby seat taking it in and out. Those front doors on the 3 door are long and heavy too... very hard to open them out wide if there's any other car / obstacle parked next to you.

It'll work - but you'll be cursing it.

I just got a phone call from a friend, he is trying to order one of those ClubSports through VW Ireland. Mental me sitting here writing why would anyone bother and he phones saying he's made his mind up on what he's getting. He had been keeping me in the loop with what he was thinking about and test driving. I'm skeptical VW Ireland will get them as easy as they are making out they will. Time will tell.

Have VW given him any idea of spec / prices? I'm guessing no :pac:

a 3 door is a disaster for baby seats, unless its a convertible then you can open the roof and plop the kid seat in. Seriously though, 3 door or cars with tight rear passenger access is a pain in the neck and back if you plan on having a child.

Have a 3 door atm, don't have kids, but getting a 5 door in anticipation :pac: Even getting fully self-sufficient adults out of the back of it is a total pain in the arse. The couple of times I've had toddlers in the back was horrible. You're both guaranteed to smack your head getting them in or out, and your back will be ****ed in no time.

Cheers lads. I'd spotted a 3 dr with DSG which looked mighty appealing... until now :(

If you're looking to change to a less thief-appealing car, I'm not sure a slightly older GTI is the answer. That car will still also attract the wrong attention.

    How about an Octavia VRS?

I guess if it was only for a few months it would be fine, but my daughter is two now, and we use a rear facing seat which needs more space then the standard seats, and I doubt it would fit in a 3 door golf. Plus the access area for getting her into the seat alone, just wouldn't work in a 3 door at all. You would nearly have to climb in there too to get her buckled in.

I see your point and agree with you but I still want my performance golf - I wouldn't be happy in anything else :(

My "logic" is that an older one would be less of a score than a 151...

Do not go 3 door! With kids and their paraphernalia,You will curse it within a short time and change it again for a 5 door.

He just likes the look of it I think. He had a mk5 GTI before and at the time wanted an ED30. Don't think the Clubsport will sway him when he decks it's more expensive for an R. £1400 in UK for those bucket seats, what will that be here? 3K?:pac:

Maybe VW Ireland will surprise us and launch the car here with a better spec (including those seats) for the Irish market! Unlikely, but the Irish spec is generally better across the board now than UK cars.

The Ed30 had a big appeal because it had a very very tuneable engine, as well as some nice cosmetic stuff, and it still undercut the MK5 R32 by thousands.

Was it ever available in Ireland. I was speaking to my dealer about it, he said he sold one but he had to get it in the UK.

No, never made available here. That's interesting, cos I know of a couple of other lads who tried to get them too (back in 2007-ish) and no dealer was interested. They didn't even know what the "Ed30" was... no shock there of course.

Just reading UK forums regarding the Clubsport. Seems to be poorly received because of the price. As you say Joe, the ED30 was the pick with a lighter engine and better drive than the R32 at the time. Problem now is that the GTI and R both use turbo 4 pots.

Just seems like there is nearly too much choice. If VW Ireland didn't reduce the price of the R 18months ago it would make sense as it would have a nice price point to sit at between the R and the GTI, problem is now there is no space there.

Exactly, and the UK guys have the same complaint. There's only 2-300 quid between them over there (on the RRP).

Are VW still planning to release the R400 at the top of the range?
If so will that be to the R what the clubsport is to the GTI?
It looks to me like the clubsport is almost more for track days than everyday use, which is where the gti and R excel as all rounders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Trackdays are good for GTIs and Rs too, especially when the rain is relentless ☺

You need to light a fire under the dealer's arse. My car landed on a Thursday evening and I collected it before lunch on the Friday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I collected mine about 4 hours after it rolled off the truck. In fairness I had a delay so they did that probably because of that and to shut me up.

My car is here too. was told it will be Friday at the earliest? Where does the PDI that place, is it the dealership?

Yeah pdi is pre delivery inspection. Dealer performs it. Removes all plastic protection, suspension blocks, registers it on their system etc......

So your car will prob at the dealer tomorrow or Thursday.

Just looking at beepbeep and 94 GTIs/Rs sold in the first three months of the year. Quite strong numbers I think, won't help resale value I would imagine in a few years if they are selling relatively well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 701 ✭✭✭carsfan

Zero per cent finance has had to have an influence.
    That and this thread!
Seriously my dealer reckoned at the start of this year there would be 100 plus R's alone sold in total this year which was higher than ever but still thinks these models will have great residuals.
The zero per cent deals seem to be gone now. I was told they were likely to continue, but obviously not. However 1.9 is still good value.
Where I am it is still unusual to see another gti or an R. I probably see more new octavia vrs models. They look pretty good actually. Got a great write up in the Irish times yesterday for the new 230 that has the same hardware as the pp gti.

They fell off a cliff for a while at least... I traded my '07 GTI for relative peanuts in 2011 but their values have held strong again in more recent times.

I suppose back in 2011, petrol cars with bigger running costs supposedly were not too welcome at the dealers.
Everybody was obsessed with diesel and the lowest tax bands back then.
As the economy recovers somewhat I suppose more interesting cars like gti/R sell better.
What wax the road tax on that gti as a matter of interest?

I had a little play with one on Tuesday coming off a few roundabouts in a row onto dual carriageways. Bit of fun and nothing silly. Got me interested in checking the spec on them so went on the Skoda config. That VRS blue colour is not available in the 230 petrol model which I found surprising, just for the diesel. The Petrol has a much smaller range of colours, could just be their configurator isn't as accurate as it should be though.

A 230 VRS Combi is a pretty capable car for making progress, and carrying stuff. Basically just a big GTI PP estate.

An 07 would be on CC not emmissions, so 2L is around the €700 mark I believe depending how far you go back. Think it went up from 660ish to 730ish.

It was around 700-750 odd... it would have been on the old pre-CO2 tax for 2.0L.

I got about 16.5k for it in 2011. Only a few months ago (5 years later!) I saw it on DoneDeal, asking price around 9k.

What difference is there in fuel consumption between the gti and dsg gti?

I believe the DSG is just a tad heavier, maybe 2-3mpg. The official figures might give you a different impression but in the real world I've found DSG is s bit thirstier.
