Any idea why News Now/RTE1HD and Oireachtas channel are all geo-blocked here in NI while RTE1+1 is 'in the clear?'

The oireachtas channel is broadcast be the houses of the oireachtas they choose to pay for an encrypted service on SKY.

Not looking to wreck anyone's head but did Sky suggest at some stage last year that April 2016 would be the launch of the RTE Player on their platform?

In fairness that's the original report we all know about. We're all looking for firm dates now.

Thanks for that, didn't realise sky were taking so long to work it out... fair play to UPC/Virgin for being able to implement it years ago

What's the quality like on Virgin Media?

Also, is there loads of ads like on the RTE Player?

from reading that Talk to Sky thread, Sky don't know when it's coming, and RTE don't know when it's coming. 8 months after announcing it you'd think someone would know something.

It's a few years since I used it on UPC and RTE wasn't completely HD at the time but remember the quality being normal enough.
I do imagine there'll be ads on the sky version though, the same way that there's ads on all the sky and channel 4 catchup players at the moment as well.

My guess(being the cynic that I am) is that it will magically appear arround the same time as the new Saorview Connect Box is launched(which will include the RTE player apparently)....

Or just before the next increase in Sky's charges to help in its justification.

Well the good thing is that the Sky and C4 ads are very short and you can fast forward.

I assume it will have to be the same with RTE Player when it eventually comes unlike the player on the website that forces you to watch ads before a program. Terrible.

& how long was it btwn when SkyQ came out v Virgin's new box that could record 4 programs & watch a 5th program, betcha SkyQ can do that now ;)

    Won't Adblock Plus stop that?

But it seems some companies are against adblocking!

No Adblock does not stop it, you have to watch the ads, they are not pop-ups but integrated in the video like in You Tube but without a skip option.
Problem is that the player is bad and often freezes and if you need to restart then you have to watch the ads again.

I hope the Sky version is a lot better.

It's got to do with the way Sky On Demand works, unlike other platforms it can only download, not stream, and the programme and advertising is a single download. Once downloaded it works pretty much as if you had recorded the programme off air, appearing in your Sky+ recordings and all. That's why you can fast forward through the adverts, though no doubt it's something Sky would like to change down the road.

Yes, main issue for me is if it will be HD.

    RTE player currently is not.

TV3 player on Sky has awful picture quality.

Sky's own programmes will often offer both a HD and SD version - though this is often not true of third parties.

But the HD version takes up more disk space and is slower to download, and it is ultimately up to you to decide whether the HD picture matters more than these things. The speed and/or usage policy attached to your broadband connection may be a factor.

Edit: I should mention that this is the way it works on Sky+HD, may be different on SkyQ.

I'd imagine that's only a coincidence. Why would RTÉ or Sky care about that?

Nothing on the Sky box here either.

Programmes are showing on the Sky+ app. It looks like it won't have all the programming that the website version has. Cable customers had this complaint also.

Well it was honest...when I went into it, it has nothing bar press select for more..backed out of it and it has disappeared....and it's back up...
    NOW with listings.

The UTV Ireland player when it launched on Sky,it only had the soaps at first then they gradually added more programmes,RTE will probably do the same!

just had a quick gander there, downloaded the Euro 2016 highlights from last night, and the picture is a poor quality SD resolution!

if thats all they're going to offer, might as well not bother!

Is not all 'catch-up' video in SD regardless how accessed?

EDIT: I am of course referring to RTE catch up and no other ;)

    Nope!

Channel 4 for instance, when you download something from catch up, it gives you the option to download in SD or HD, even their SD is way better than the RTE SD video.

They've basically just lifted their pi$$ poor resolution from their online rte player and put in on Sky boxes.

Great to see the Player on sky but the picture quality is diabolical - one of the worst i have ever seen on the platform :(
