I'm interested in one of these 3rd generation Nests that are being offered plus theres a €50 online bonus now. They look very handy and I've an old crappy APT 24 hour timer clocks that I'd love to get rid off and this seems be a top job. Whats the general consensus from users?

You have to pay the standard rate of electricity for two years. If you are on a discounted rate (and you should be!), you need to work out the maths on paying extra for your electricity rather than going to Harvey Norman and getting it installed independently on Electric Ireland.

Noticed this when shopping around for Electricity

Free Nest and Installation worth €374

    2 year contract

Looks a nice piece of kit ...
    Nest Site

    Reviews on Amazon are excellent

Looks a genuine bargain to me!
Been meaning to get a thermostat for yonks ... so it's a no brainer for me!
    Have a climote,really good,no problems,great reviews, similar to nest,

Yeh, I did a quick calculation last night and the difference between my current discounted rate and Electric Irelands standard rate is quite small, roughly works out at an extra €100 per year. So it'll cost me €200 or so in total, seems cheaper than getting it installed independently. Would this Nest reduce my oil bill /consumption slightly? Or would they use more oil as they're not time based?

I wanted a Nest too but my supplier was SSE Airtricity; luckily when I asked them about my contract it seems they forgot to remind me my old contract had run out and I was free to move. Yesterday I ran my usage figuers through the Bonkers website and the Electric Ireland / NEST deal came out very bad in the comparison - I signed up with Energia for 1 year. Check your figures though it just might be worthwhile to pay the higher kilowatt hour charge with Electric Ireland for the benefit of the "free" Nest plus installation

My friend and neighbour got a Nest, while I got a cheaper "simple" wifi mode. My friend regretted getting the Nest, he realised that he didn't end up using the learning ability at all and just used it as a simple wifi thermostat instead. He realised he could have gotten the same functionality for a third of the price with my simpler model.

So it depends on how much the Nest costs versus a simpler wifi thermostat (include difference in electricity rates, installation, etc.) and if you think you will use the learning functionality or not.

The reason I'm interested in this is I wanted to change from my crappy APT 24 hour timer switch to a 7 day programmer type device. An electrician said it would be about €150 to put in a 2 channel device that I'm looking for. It was he who said to check out Nest or Climote with electricity suppliers. So if I'm gonna pay €150 for a 2 channel device, should I just go with a Nest? I know this only a thermometer but does it have similar functionality to a 7 day programmer? Maybe I'll post that question in plumbing section!

My one does all that, both wifi controllable and 7 day (or 5/2 day programmable) and actually lots of other options.

I was able to install it myself and cost less then €150

Not entirely similar, the climote is a subscription based programmable thermostat. The Nest has no subscription and is a learning thermostat.

I wouldn't feel confident installing one of them so it'd cost me to get an electrician. So that's my point - Do I buy one, pay an electrician, total cost over €200. Or go with Electric Ireland, total cost will be the same, €200 or so. Which is the better device? Your one or a Nest?

A year or so with the a Nest and very happy with it.
Takes a while to get it working to suit your needs.
The feature that learns how long it takes to reach a temperature never rally worked for me - so turned it off.
Works a treat these days and rarely adjust it.
Yes, I would say that it does indeed save you oil/gas ... Mainly for the thermostat feature really o guess.

Nest app is supposed to turn on/off as get near home/leave home but that hasn't worked for me yet.

There is an app called Sky Lark that does the gps on/off thingy very well though. As far as I know the app works with the Honeywell too

Good to hear that Keith. So can you set the Nest to come on at different times ie Is it programmeable?

Yes, and it'll learn to adjust itself

Excuse my ignorance but what happens in between those schedules? Does heating turn off? I'm only used to a crappy 24 hour timer so don't fully understand this Nest thing yet!

i got the nest from electric ireland also, replaced my old manual push pin type switch, very happy with it ,no issues. it is programmable and quite easy to use. since then ive added nest protect smoke/co2 alarms which also 'talk' to the thermostat plus replaced some of the lights in the house with phillips hue - (works with nest). worth checking out IFTTT as well. some handy links below !

Wow, that's impressive. Amazing the direction modern technology is going.

That's another question. My old timer clock is in the hot press but thermostat is in hallway. I presume a Nest goes there but is the old clock just disconnected?

the heat link replaces your old timer clock, it's just a littte white box with a button on the center and a status led, you will never really have to go near it. The thermostat -(ie the fancy bit !) can be placed anywhere , just plug's in to a normal electrical socket. works over wifi

It holds the temperature till it gets giving a new temperature.
So in the night it'll help of the temperature at 14 degrees while we sleep then increase it when we wake

Currently, I have the heating set to come on for an hour in the morning to take the chill out of the house and so we all can have hot showers. Then it's set from about 3 to 4 for when kids get home and again about 7 to 8. Obviously it's on for longer when it's colder and then I turn thermostat down during summer so it only heats water. So the Nest can do all this (and more) and also help reduce my energy bill?

Was interested in getting one of these systems in but seemingly we have two zones in the house (thermostat in hallway and upstairs landing) so the Nest or Hive won't work for us unless we buy two.

    Anyone got alternative option?

I got this offer and had nothing but trouble with the nest. Cost me money. Nest would freeze and oil would stay on all day & night . had to flick the trip switch to.reset the unit controlling the switch.for oil.on wall. Had several issues like this spent hours looking at forums setting it up. Was working nicely for about 2 weeks. Complained to Nest by email and chat no support. Waste of time... Put back in the old 24hr switch. Oh had replace pump on boiler during my brief 2months might be a coincidence...

I suppose that's the downside of these new tech things, there's always the occasional glitch. So if the Nest does start playing up, is there a way to manually operate the heating instead of it? Is there an on/off switch where that heat link goes?

You meant to override the unit on the wall by holding for 10 seconds. Didn't work for me. My experience with nest was disappointing... Concept is good but needs to be full proof.

Tado can handle two heating zones plus hot water (if needed).
