Public service new entrants pay

    Is there a different pay scale for new entrants to the public sector (civil service/revenue/hse) in the same way as there is for teachers ?

    Yes. Approx 10% less I believe with different pension entitlements such as career average instead of final salary. May be more differences too.

    Yes and no - the Haddington road deal ended the 'two tier' system where there were two new increments below the old first point on the scales for new entrants. However the new pension arrangements mean your pension expectations will be a bit less at retirement.

    Vis-à-vis pension entitlements- keep in mind the superannuation schemes have changed significantly several times since 1995-the latest change is the 'career average salary' pension- however, COPC, revised vesting ages for the contributory OAP which is the main pension for most of the public sector- and the removal of early retirement options from many (who could previously retire at 60)- are all significant.

    Don't look at what someone who retires this year (aka a pre-1995 entrant) might be entitled to- the pension rights of public sector employees in general have eroded significantly since then............
