I wonder about people who are either rude,dismissive, nasty or just plain ignore the people who tend to them in shops, off licences, restaurants, etc.
I wonder are they like that in all aspects of their life or do they really not see the people behind the counters, are they so wrapped up in themselves that they don't have the time for a simple please or thank you??? Or are they just dicks???

Double edged sword, You get tutting when you take to long. I normally say thanks on receiving the receipt.

It's just the make up of their brain.

They actually can't help themselves like serial killers. It's just the way they are.

Our personalities are just products of our chemical make up, and nothing we do can change that.

I wouldn't be too hard on people just been who they are inside.

I'd say there's a small percentage of them that are just away with the fairies in their own heads, or are having a bad day and are preoccupied with something else.

There are evil people out there you know. They're not all "sick" or victims of their brain chemistry or childhood or whatever.

But we're talking about jerks who lord it over people they meet - they know exactly what they're doing and no matter how sh*t their personal lives are, there is no excuse for treating staff like that.

I am always pleasant to people who tend to me in shops, off licences, restaurants etc.
I do wonder about the ones who slap your change on to the counter after I have placed it in their hand though....are they just dicks? Cuts both ways imo.

Definately find that people are much ruder to staff in the service industry. I especially love when they think their 12 euro is making your wages. Lady, that doesn't even cover an hour of my time. I find older women are the worst for it. We've had to ask customers to leave, and they were always older women.

This reminds me of a trip to mace one morning on the way to college, I was so hungover I couldn't even see straight. Went into the shop, asked for a roll. She asked what roll, white or brown. I told her white and she rolled her eyes at me. She made up the roll, asked me if I wanted ketchup on it and I said no. She proceeded to squirt ketchup on it, wrapped it and practically tossed it at me.
I went to the till to pay. She was the only staff in the shop. I was the only customer. She stood at the deli for what felt like ages before sauntering over to me and without even asking for the money, she stood with a bored expression on her face, her eyes being rolled and her hand stuck out for the money. I waited a second for her to say the price, she never did so I threw the roll at her, and walked out.

I'm always polite to people working in stores. BUT, there's another side to it also. I get a ton of people who randomly decide to strike up conversations with me when I'm out buying food etc. It's alright the odd time, but most of the time I'm there thinking 'can you just take my money so I can go?!'. Even stupid comments like 'oh you look tired today', or the idiot who used to try to offer me hugs (FYI this was usually after a gym session so I'd be wrecked looking!). Most recently, there's the guy in my local shop who keeps asking me if I'm 'working late' if I pop in around 10pm - it's like his only conversation starter, to a conversation I didn't even want to have in the first place! Oh and then there's the comments on whatever I'm buying, like if I'm buying food for a curry I get something like 'making something nice?'. Yeah, I'm making a curry, that's why I'm buying curry powder. Or, if I buy something a few times, it's 'oh you really like these!'.

I sound like a right biatch now, but I honestly just don't want to have a full-blown (and awkward, I might add) conversation with someone every single time I go to the damn shop. There's 1 or 2 places I actively avoid now because of it!

I think some people just really resent paying for anything, anywhere, anytime, but know that it's unavoidable if they want to avail of products and services. This resentment then comes out in their actions in that treat everyone they come into contact with on the "other side" of the transaction deplorably.

It's disgusting in my opinion. How people can have a one on one interaction with someone and not show them the basics of civility and gratitude, is mind-boggling to me. Fair enough, you don't want the staff to be over-friendly with you or too chatty, especially if you're in a rush, but treating them like robots is fairly prickish to me.

I don't think that's bitchy at all. Those folks sound like they have no idea of boundaries, especially the hugger.

Ah thanks, it's nice to know someone can relate. I'm never rude to people working in stores, I worked in retail myself when I was younger and I know what it's like. But sometimes I'm just not in the mood for conversation.
