Sad story of a farmer, who was jailed over his protests about his farm being repossessed, committing suicide. My sympathies to the family involved:(

IMO the indo is stooping to a new low recently, the Buncrana tragedy being another example,

The family of the farmer are well known in this area, & have asked for privacy, I know no names were mentioned but....

    Yes the children frightened them.
I have a few aches and bruises but not a bad as I thought.

Apparently he is the Army Press Officer and was on the phone as part of his job/duties. There is another picture of him kneeling down beside an elderly lady in a wheel chair with medals on her lap. Cannot find the pic at the moment.

Any threads on here or good sites on the net regarding pig farming? I have just accepted a job on a pig farm when I get back in a month from NZ. Ive only worked with dairy cows and don't want to seem like a total numpty!

What's the big put off? Employer I'm going to has had a hard time with staff too. In that way of thinking I must be coocoo to be happy milking cows at 5am.

How are sick stock treated, marked and seperated? Asking mainly because I'm colorblind and have to mark up treated cows in the herd extra carefully.

How is feed measured? My girlfriend's uncle has pigs and she says simple weigh in kg/head.

Will have plenty to ask as I think of it anyway.

Main put off is having to work a lot don't know how to anymore or just want it too handy. It depends on what section you'll be workin in as to how hard it'd be. Different farms have different ways to treat it used to be different colour for different days but the spray will wear off after one or two days anyway. Or just use a line one day and a cross the next maybe.
It's all computerised feeding here so once the weight and amount of pigs per pen is put into the computer it works it out from there increasing gradually. How many sows is there on the farm?

Our dog died last night, we got it as a pup nealry 6 years ago for our daughter who had been attacked by a dog before that. He was grand yesterday morning, he was a fecker for going into the calving pens and he might have got a kick, was going to bring him to vet this morning. Great guard dog. She is now looking for another one

Do you know what type of dog you'll get.
We have a springer spaniel and she's 15 now and was one of the best dogs we ever had. Good with children and would still bark if a stranger came into the yard. We got her in the cats and dogs home and was shy at first but turned into a brilliant dog. Really good natured.
We also have a beagle but I wouldn't trust him with children. He can growl if you took a stick or something on him. Here they are.

Ye she still has a scar on her face and her neck. But we didnt want her to have a fear of dogs, she knows she was just very unlucky

Ah sh*t one whelan, I'm sorry to hear that. At least it seems like he went quick and wasn't in pain if that's any consolation.

Had a friend of mine looking for a home for a malamute there yesterday. You don't fancy one of those do you? :P

Sounds simple enough then. The farm I'm going to has 300 sows and high health status.

Best of luck with the new job.

Know very little about pigs. Low margins, plenty of antibiotics and meal. And a heap of slurry left over. I'm sure it's more technical than that.

Handy enough so small operation about 2 or 3 workers?
1700 on the farm I'm working on and 10 workers flat out all the time.

I thought it sounded small but there's 3 staff usually. I know there's a big range but what problems are you using antibiotics to treat for?
