Do any of the regulars think we'll get away from needing good single core performance for gaming anytime soon? I'm tempted to go with rakes of slower cores for my next build but don't want to be horribly CPU bound.

Nope. Too many engines, APIs etc that will lag behind.

For the next two years or so, single core will still be king. But there are engines that are coming out that are very well written. The Division is a very good example of this and not the below

A quin core processor - interesting.

WOT is a great example, barely touches my GPU :pac:

Upgrading myself this year and am pondering the same thing, interested to see what Broadwell E brings cos I need to upgrade soon. My current mobo is 6 years old and is on the way out.

I'm on 775 for 8 going on 9 years now, so very similar boat.

Having an octa-core for just NAS functions I've my heart set on at least eight cores for this new build as I'll probably have it in 2022.

5960X vs 2x 2620's. Xeons give 33% more horsepower with the chance to drop in two beast CPUs in 3-4yrs but the i7 would be noticeably better in games. Hmmm hmmm.

Yeah I'm on 1366 with an i7 930, cpu itself seems ok but stuff is starting to go iffy on the board itself. There's a thread over on OCUK forums with people posting the overclocks they are getting from 5820K's and there's some good numbers there from newer batch's. Not that much slower than a good OC on a Skylake.

I've gone from dual x5650 to a 5820k sitting at 4.1. My work machine is a dual 2620k. Depending on your needs, multiple cores are a very bad ROI overall for most people in general. I don't even care about the cores, I just needed the RAM limits the systems provided me.

It probably would be sub-optimal, but for some stuff it would be awesome (starting to accumulate a chunk of 4k footage from my phone for one). Visualization would be the main selling point for the dual Zeon build.

Another one for the Dabs archives.

Ordered a HP Freesync 32" monitor.

What arrived to reception this morning?

Went out to pick up my 'monitor' to be greeted by a €50 deskjet printer.

You really have to stop ordering from them!

Printers these days can play all sorts of games, like doom. You might find you like it better than the monitor.

Not sure if anyone's seen this, but could be v handy for anybody buying any parts off Amazon. Free £7 if you buy a £30 amazon gift card first!

Hoping to get a 380x in the next few weeks and the offer seems valid until May!

So friends, I've been wondering about my tech spend this year and I'm wondering if it's woth investigating a move onto something with DDR4 & Skylake from my 2500k machine (which to its credit hasn't given me any cause for complaints or pressing need to upgrade) or should I give it another 12 months to let the tech mature a bit? I've got a 970 GTX plugged in and 8GB of RAM and so I'm tipping along nicely with most games I've been playing and don't feel like there's any major rush, but I figured I'd throw it open to the floor and ask what people think.

DDR4 does show an upgrade in some games, but my own ideology is that if it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Personally I'd wait at least for Kaby Lake and see, but you wouldn't be going wrong to upgrade now either.

Source? AFAIK the only real thing DDR4 bring to the table is energy efficiency and higher speeds possible... but there is no real difference between 2133MHz DDR4 vs DDR3, for example.

    Fallout 4 is one anyways

Not overly commonplace I don't think but still exists

If it ain't broke, it isn't worth spending 500~ to upgrade right now. The 2500K is still an amazing chip. The slight minimum framerate bump from upgrading the CPU is not worth it. Overclock the CPU if you are seeing any issues (which it seems you aren't). The 970 is also still top class so no graphics worries. I'd only be looking at upgrading if you wanted to get the first gen Rift or Vive for VR, where the recommended specs are actually minimum :D. Even then you are waiting until the end of the year for the results of nVidia vs AMD on the graphics front.

If you have a look at the benchmarks the performance gains recently have been minuscule with intel pushing down the power envelope.

    2500k vs 4570:
    0-10% Better scores
    50% less typical power draw

If you haven't already, find a killer overclock and roll with that for another year.

Thanks guys, I kinda figured I was in decent shape, so won't worry about it for another year. 3 new swank monitors it is! :D

Got myself a 7970 but my PSU is only 450W and 1x6pin and 1x8pin.
Looking at a Corsair VS650 from amazon for just over 50, but if anyone here has something similar they are looking to sell, give me a shout. Im not in much of a hurry, might be another week before I buy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

Unless your system is otherwise demanding 450w is OK for a 7970.

Just a stock fx6300, couple case fans, 2 HDD's and a SSD. Still have to get around the 2x8pins I need. I seem to remember this being discussed somewhere a while back, might scroll back through this thread and see was it here.
