Safer/more fexible altenative to glass for a desk top?

A few years ago I had a sheet of glass measured to the same size as my desk. First I covered the desk with black card and then I put my favourite photos on it and laid the glass on top.

It was a lovely effect and I'd like to do the same again for my nine-year-old's desk. Are there better/cheaper/safer materials I should consider? I've found 'polycarbonate' as well as acrylic online. Polycarbonate seems to have more flexibility but I really can't tell from descriptions alone. Thanks!

acrylic wouldn't scratch as easily.

Acrylic would work best.

Acrylic shatters and I personally wouldn't put it near a child. It is very sharp when broke. Polycarbonate is tougher but scratches easy. I'd stick with toughened glass.

How would it break if it's on a desk? You'd need to bang it with a hammer.

Toughened glass it is then, thanks all. Yes, the likelyhood of it breaking is slim but any of you who have kids know that 'nature finds a way'
