First spin in a while apart from my short commutes. My fitness has definitely disappeared over the winter. Found it tough enough even though there was hardly a breeze. 9 personal bests on Strava though.

    Distance 30.87km
    Avg 23.9km/h
    Elevation 161m

Any idea what the letters 'POD' are for in the title of that segment?

(The reason I ask is that several segments here in North County Dublin are also prefixed with 'POD' in the title.)

Not got a clue, there is alot of segments with that prefix around my area. I will enquire in work though as i was rather curious myself.

Lovely day for a spin. I wasn't the only one thinking that, loads of cyclists out today. First time up Kippure this year. I got PRs on Stocking Lane and Kippure itself and a few more segments so the turbo climbing sessions have paid off.
My endurance needs some work though, legs were well shot by the time I got back to base. They weren't even in great shape a few k before that. I think I pushed a bit hard for the first hour or so and suffered afterwards. I had intended to go back up Cunard to the featherbeds but I kept going on towards Glassmucky and back to the start.

Spring has put me in good form. Can't wait to get more miles in.

    72km with 1300m climbing.

    Possibly the segment makers initials.

Went out for a handy spin yesterday and somebiw ended up doing The Vee and Melleray again, an enjoyable spin and what i needed after Seskin did my confidence in.

The descent off Melleray is quite sharp and my new found love for descending put me in 4th place overall on Strava, 20secs off the KOM which I think is gettable as i nearly ditched the bike on a bend.

Vee and Mellary is a great training loop, used do it a lot a few years ago.

I'd be inclined to leave that KOM go though;between narrow and very steep road with occasional jeep with trailers it's pretty dodgy. The biggest hazard is the gravel close to bottom washed down from minor road.

Your old enough to ignore of course ☺

Possibly but there doesn't seem to be anyone with those initials well placed. I suspect the ones here have been created by someone in my club.

Strong feeling that you are spot on with your advice but its probably the only KOM I'll ever have a chance of getting so i might try it once more...

Ever try Shanhrans Climb around that area? How does it compare to Seskin if so.

How's the surface looking around that area now?

The surface down to Oonagh bridge is poor.Basically a dirt track.Risking a puncture.
From the bridge up to the really steep section at the start of the climb is OK. It was dry yesterday, which helps on that ridiculous ramp..from then on to the top of Balinagee it was fine.
I'd swerve that area in damp conditions.

Shanrahan is tough, much longer than Seskin about 8km v 3km. Very steady around 8% whereas Seskin is two hard long ramps.

    Give it a go.

Next time after Vee don't turn left for Mellary but takes next left nice gentle climb which brings you down by pub in Newcastle.

Nire climb is tough enough to especially up by bog.

Don't forget Ticincor in a few weeks!

Long and steady with no big ramps will suit me better i think. It's included in The Vee Valley Challenge which I'm keen to do and will now.

Went from Sandyford through Tallaght to (R133-->N81) and to Blessington Lakes, took a picture, ate some home made bars and head back - was just wondering, is there any other flat-ish way back (I would head to Sally Gap and mountains in general as part of a different training), round the same km mark (so 60-90 in total)...

Ballinascorney, bohernabreena, ballycullen, woodstown, rockbrook, along m50/marley park to lamb doyles. would be lumpy but not too bad, skirting the bottom of the dublin mountains.

45km @29.9kmph on Saturday around rathfeigh bellinteer and bedtime

55km on Sunday but had a problem with Garmin freezing. Cleared out history and updated firmware to fix.

Got a Rotor Q ring for my inside ring to try out and seems to be a lot more comfortable to use even when at high cadence. I've lost the dead spot in my crank and power is up. Cadence on Saturday was 98 avg and power was 210w with 237w np

So when I started this job 4 years ago I pretty much gave up on cycling, even in the evening and at the weekends as I was a bit of a workaholic and the job was draining. It's gotten easier so decided to attempt the commute back in, 35km door door- Balbriggan to Thomas Street. Got in, in about 2 hours. Painfully slow I know but that's on a mountain bike and it's been four years so I'm out of shape.
Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be and with one of the main guys here having discovered cycling works out better for him than taking the car, I'm going to try and do this at least once a week.

It was great, at least out in the countryside, I forgot that North County Dublin can be so nice on the bike.

It really is such a nice place to be on the bike, i only recently moved out that direction, so many places to go cycle

That's for sure. NCC is lovely in itself but then you have Louth and Meath on your doorstep too and you're spoiled for country lanes to cycle.

Took on Howth Head from the village side this morning. Beaut of a day. 11 minutes to the summit, 40km in 1:48.

I took to Howth also, twice up from Howth village. Gorgeous day. My starva fly by shows a bunch of people in Howth. 90K at 28.9k avg. Good day.

It must be a Howth day today! I went from the village too before work, trying the granny gear on my tourer. Same effort but slower, pointless if you're not hauling load. But since the extra gears are there, its really hard to refrain from using them!

OK, so it's yesterday...but had a really nice spin from Deansgrange to Enniskerry and Glencree, then up to the top of Kippure (smashing view), then back over the feather beds to Rathfarnham (to collect car after late night boozing session).

Today Monday is just such a nice day - why am I in front of a computer?

feeling a lot of howth jealousy with it being such a beautiful day :(

think the week is due to be good till thursday so will aim to head up tomorrow morning :)

Definitely a lot of Howth jealously going on today

Hmmmmmm.........I gave a nod to someone this morning around Howth-way on a tourer with red panniers on the front. Was that you by any chance? Probably would have been around 7.30ish.

Great morning for it. Ditched the Mistral jacket and went for gilet & armwarmers - so glad I did!

It was me myself and my Torpedo Badger with medium load of food, clothes and locks :) Nice to meet you!

(was it on the way in to the village?)

    *Tips hat

Now that I think about it, I've no idea where I saw you - but it was definitely going in the opposite direction! It was the bike & the red panniers out front that stuck out in my mind!

Possibly but there doesn't seem to be anyone with those initials well placed. I suspect the ones here have been created by someone in my club.

    A few examples:

    https://www.strava.com/segments/9488405
    https://www.strava.com/segments/9488412
    https://www.strava.com/segments/9519350

You're thinking about this wrongly, people well placed don't create them, they bleedin hammer them! Us lesser mortals create them :o

I'd hazard a wild guess that it might be this fella, but maybe not. He was the first one I came across with the initials POD on both segments.

    My investigation stops here.

Until my OCD kicks in later in the week and I JUST HAVE TO KNOW

The one and only time I scratched my AL9.0 was leaning it like that against a sign post. Lesson learned! Always try and use the saddle now! :)

Anyways... after a lot of procrastinating this weekend I did feck all cycling and managed to get around to cleaning my winter bike yesterday. It was badly in need of it tbh.
Took a while and I got there in the end!

I forgot how nice, smooth and in general, easier, it is to cycle with a clean chain and cassette. I'm convinced that after a couple of weeks of grime and dirt attaching themselves to your chain and cassette , you "lose" a gear or two. E.G. Your rear "25" runs like a "23" etc.

All that aside had a lovely morning out this morning, although due to the weather over the weekend I didn't think of checking for the weather this morning.

I was very fupping surprised to see the temp drop to -1.8 and me with no neck/face warmer.

    It was bleedin freezin'!

    Proper fuppin freezin'!

But it was great to have daylight back in the mornings. I love getting out at dawn. First light was at about 5:50am, "no lights to see your way" @ about 6:15am and full on daylight at 6:30am

It really is a fantastic time of the day in my opinion. Well worth the 15 minute head debate at 5am and the painful dragging of one's ass out of bed, which is the hard bit tbh.

18.6km done with 314m climbed up stocking etc.

    Bring on the Dawn! :)
