Had a recently calved heifer with a swollen quarter. Got her into the crush with difficulty and went to strig her out. Turns out there was no oppening on the spin. anybody come across this before?

Was the quarter hard? Had one this year that got something similar. Quarter used to seal or crust over evry morning and evening. Used to take a couple of minutes to get it going. She had mastitis in it. The boss here says he often saw it in dairy cows years back. Blackspot he said it was called and wave the quarter goodbye when they get it. Very hard to cure. I am around sucklers 25 years and had never heard of it.

I think that Fucidin (?) controls blackspot.
Iirc it's a product used on humans. Greysides will correct me I'm sure.

A cow who must be on her 6th calf, calved down last week. Every quarter was rock hard and nothing coming out. Riddled with mastitis the bitch. Had to take the calf off needless to say.

Lucky the infection hadn't harmed the calf I would say. At least the cow was alive and worth a cull value. No consolation I know but the bright side and all that.

Sorta-ish but had teats open to begin with. Had an animal here years back that completely sealed a teat one winter. Couldn't find or get an opening at all (in the crush, torch, tried to poke it open with syringe- nada) in the spring for the calf but he got by on three. The following winter the other one closed up fully so the cow got road after rearing the calf on two spins.

Have a cow here at the moment with two openings in the teat so the calf never sucks it, could we transplant one to yours :p

I've heard of blackspot but only cause I've read about it. Is a symptom pressing in the udder with a finger and the indentation stays there? Or am I mixing it up with something else?

No quarter is soft. It's not a blocked opening there never was one.
Not worried, there is no way for infection to get in. She'll just have to work away as a 3 spinner

That's something different. Black spot is a secondary infection of a damaged tear end. Overmilkibg is the prime cause

We tend to Have one or so calve that way maybe every second year or so. Just a blind quarter we call it. Was talking to classifier one day and he said some bulls appear to be more prone to it. Dad used reckon it was when they were calves and other calves used suck on them and cause it. Annoying but as you say no infection possible and the springing goes down eventually. Only thing from a suckle point of view would be that the calf wouldn't keep going for the blind one when born. They generally milk as well as 4 titters. Put a beef bull on them here just in case alltho one or two could be best cows in terms of yield and fert

Got lawns mowed and wee bit of gardening tidy up. Very sore today but it was nice to be out doing something without getting wet and cold.

    How was 'trafficability?' ☺

Anyone ever go with a light shake of 10 10 20 on the lawn? Twas lovely and green over the winter but looking a bit hungry now

Yep. Little and often is the trick, remember you want to feed it rather than get a big crop in 8 weeks 😱

It's amazing how it's dried out now, squelching a bit in one place but generally good. It's been a good year for moss :(

We lost a week old calf to it last week. Went down in a bang. The cow had 1 infected quarter I'd say as he had been alright up to then...lovely charlaoisx heifer too

I go with a 2gal bucket of 10 10 20 in the spring and autumn. 0.4 acre lawn. Just keeps it nice and green while keeping the daisy's away.

Close shave with that big calf, they did well to keep him alive, a section might have been a better option, maybe there wasn't a vet available.
