Fitness industry scam

    The whole fitness and nutrition industry is the biggest scam of our time.

    Everywhere you look it's young fellas with protein shakers, people tracking their macros and gyms are full of people taking selfies for social media to document their gains or their flat stomachs.

    A multi billion pounds industry constantly contradicting itself, skip breakfast/ never skip breakfast, high intensity bursts are best/steady state is easier on the body, juicing is great/ too much sugar in juice so eat the whole fruit.

    The industry has never been bigger and people never more obsessed by themselves and their bodies fuelled by constantly posting images of themselves for other people to compliment.

    All the while we have an obesity issue, it's time the government started taking a hands on approach and moving young people away from that nonsense and put a curriculum together for schools to teach vulnerable young people about cooking and a balanced diet, aswell as keeping active.

    What happened to, within reason, eating what you like but less of it??

    People got soft, that's what happened.

    All the fitness industry ever got out of me was money for a bicycle, a swimsuit and a pair of runners. But you have to put up with the Irish weather outdoors, so the weaklings retreat to the heated and dry safety of the gym and pool... ;)

    I track my macros and calorie intake, and it is working very well.

    How is it a scam? Go to the gym and eat right and it will pay off.

    It's the gym-**** with Facebook accounts that you should ignore.
    Every gobshíte that lost a bit of weight is suddenly a personal trainer and nutritionist.

    So people who care about what they eat and make sure they look after their fitness are all narcissists? They actually care about their appearance and take responsibility for their weight, what they eat etc. Yet you think they should be ridiculed?

    Yet if someone is obese, they are just curvy, a 'real women' or have a 'thyroid issue' (they never do, they just eat poorly). You are saying the Government should have to get involved and tell these people what to eat/work out.

    Do you not find it very hypocritical to mock people who are proactively looking after their health, yet saying the Government needs to basically help fat people? I cant understand why Ireland is probably one of the few countries in the world, where you mention going to the gym and people roll their eyes and insult you. It is sign as a bad thing to be considered with what you eat. Yet if you are fat, all by your own making and someone says anything about your weight. It is considered mean and cruel.

    Why is there a sudden need protein powder? Every person I know that has decided to eat better/get in shape has gone straight out to buy it, I thought eating correctly was the key? Maybe I just don't get it

    For me it's just yet another way for people to look for individuality, in this ever increasingly soulless world of instant gratification people are not willing to develop themselves internally because it takes a lot more time and effort. Everyone is searching for individuality but very few know that it comes from the inside.

    With all due respect I have been very ill with hypothyroidism. My skin cracked, my hair was falling out, I needed a blood transfusion because it ****ed my iron levels so bad while it went untreated. I was depressed, always cold, couldn't bear any heat on me. My weight went up crazy fast despite me actually not eating very much, and it took a really long time on medication for me to feel like I could even function like a normal person. When I got sorted on the medication and acknowledged there was a problem, all that weight I couldn't explain started to just fall off me. And it was attitudes like yours that made me think hypothyroidism wasn't a real or serious thing, that I should be able to lose weight without excuses. It took many many many chats with my doctor to make me believe it wasn't just an excuse.

    Don't belittle a serious illness you don't understand

    There isn't a need, but it's an easy source of protein which is comparitively cheap. The problem is, the sort of people you mentioned there will make zero progress because the rest of their diet is likely **** with little to no other sources of protein and calories are either too low(for building muscle) or too high (for getting leaner).

    Don't belittle a serious illness you don't understand

    I don't think the poster meant to offend you or people who actually have thyroid issues. But there are some people who will always use their slow metabolism as an excuse when it's their crap diet that's the real cause.

The problem is, the sort of people you mentioned there will make zero progress because the rest of their diet is likely **** with little to no other sources of protein and calories are either too low(for building muscle) or too high (for getting leaner).


    Very true! I remember years ago I knew a guy that was extremely fit and healthy, he ate copious amounts of chicken breast (boiled), said it was part of his fitness routine or whatever, is it a way of cutting out the need for this type of eating? Do you need a f**kton of protein when working out and this is an easier alternative than constantly eating chicken? I don't know much about this kind of thing, I'm genuinely curious

    I don't go to the gym, but I wear a fitbit watch, and I have a scales that gives my weight and a body fat % read out.
    I recently bought a blood pressure monitor, and all these devices work with apps on my phone.
    I make home made smoothies, I don't think juicing is good as you need more than the juice from a fruit or a vegetable, lots of good stuff in the pulp.
    I do buy protein whey and also uses that in a smoothie. I use to drink nothing but tea, but now I drink a more varied range of stuff.

    It is important to be fit, for health. So many diseases linked to being unfit, and I suspect everyone wants to be feeling good when they get old.
    I agree with the OP that healthy lifestyles starting with food should be part of the school curriculum. People eating food that is not healthy, in the end leads to more people in hospital or being unwell and it has two effects.
    One it has a person suffering from some medical issue, and two it costs taxpayers money if our hospitals are seeing the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle.

    I had a friend who was very unfit, but I am so happy with him that he made an effort to become fit, and he is looking so much better now.
    For most people it is about consciously thinking of what is good for them, thinking of the longer term consequences if they don't look after themselves, thinking of how you want to look, and avoiding how you don't want to look.

    The fitness industry is big business, but if it is working for people, that is all that matters.

    Agree that something should be done in schools. Ideally make home ec compulsory and start it in primary school, drive home the message about eating a healthy, balanced diet. PE should be more than once a week too, ideally 3-5 times a week with participation expected, no 'I forgot my tracksuit' excuses and a range of different sports and activities done.

    Yes, a thread after my heart.

    I am finding it absurd that these health and fitness types get so much TV and Radio airtime. It also seems like everyone of the Assets Modelling alumni suddenly go into Food Blogging/Health Cooking books/nutrition when their modelling career ends. It has become a complete and utter bore at this stage.

    Then we have the Operation Transformation and Niall Brezzy Breslin types. Lose weight, you won't be miserable anymore. Run the Brezzy Triathlon, no more depression for you. It is completely fraudulent despite the small print.

    Joining a gym seems to be another cure for personal issues.

    They would be easy to ignore if they were not investing the media so often and health fascism seems to have the ear of whatever the government of the day is.

    You can make nice drinks with them.

    I get out the blender, put in some milk, a scoop of my chocolate whey protein, then some banana, spinach leaves and blueberries.
    Then blend, and I have a really nice smoothie.

    Whey protein is linked to a lot of positive health benefits. Probably one reason why the growth of it's use continues.
