Does anyone know about the mini 0803 firmware versions?

I have 2 of them with internal memory, one seems to be working ok, but the other has start up problems most of the time and doesn't boot to record.

FW20140812 V1.0 - Dodgy one (firmware version displayed in separate screen when clicked)
FW20140507 V1.0 - Good one (firmware version shows in main menu when clicked)

Looking at the firmware version, it seems they are titled by date and it would appear the older one (May 7 2014) is working better than the newer one (12 August 2014), if I'm understanding the version name properly.

The older one also seems to have a few more options in the menu.

Is there any newer and greater firmware that has been tried and tested as least bug free as possible? I think I remember something about a custom built one from a few owners, but not sure if this was the 0803...

    That was for the 0806.

Have you tried installing the earlier firmware on the camera giving trouble?

failing that, have you had a look on DashCamTalk 0803 for newer/better versions of the firmware?

Also, the latest version here is 20140919 which is 3 versions on from your 20140812 version

Just had a look, it seems the one on it is the latest, although maybe the wrong one is on it, but I doubt it: https://dashcamtalk.com/mini-0803/#Firmware

There's also a custom built one here linked to from the same page: http://dc.p-mc.eu/0803/firmware

maybe worth a shot! I love the size of the mini and the screen etc, but I've been in possession of 3 mini 0803's and 1 mini 0801. The 0801 gave problems and I think 2 of the 3 0803's have been giving trouble too. The reviews are very mixed online for all the mini series I've seen. I think if I was buying another I'd want it to be far more reliable piece even if it cost a good bit more. If one is €70 and the other is €200, you could be investing €200 to save your ass, or wasting €70 if it isn't on when you need it the most.

Give them a try, theres plenty of info on dashcamtalk on how to solve issues etc with the various dash cams, and there are some very dedicated posters there who have a wealth of information.

I've had an 0801 for about 14 months, and never had a problem with it, it's still running on it's originally shipped factory firmware,

then about a year ago I got an 0806, and though there were issues at the beginning, since I installed the custom firmware (that I mentioned here a good while back), it's been running fine.

I do really like the mini's myself as well as they are so small, yet still do the job required,

I did pick up another dash cam for rental cars when travelling, and it's also an excellent camera, rivalling the 0806 for video quality, its a DoLotu version of the G1W, picked up for about €40. it's ideal for travelling because it comes with a suction mount as opposed to the mini series sticky base mount, which isn't ideal for just a day or 2 in a rental car.

Thanks again. Will try update the firmware to the latest custom one on that link and see if it brings any changes. I have a feeling the dodgy one could be hardware related though.

I also made the mistake of thinking the internal memory unit would be better, to have the internal and the external, but I think spending the extra few quid on a second memory card is better than spending the extra few quid on the internal memory, this way you can easily remove the card and swap it if you capture something important, rather than having to switch options and choose internal when you need to take out the external etc. I have it this way on my two ITB100HD units and it works much better, and of course you just need to eject the card as opposed to remove the unit if you need to connect it to the pc, and can do an immediate back up via your phones memory card if it uses the same one :)

I wouldn't be interested in internal memory at all, it would mean dismounting the camera regularly!

I have doubles of both SD cards I use (32gb for the 0801 & 64gb for the 0806), in that way, if I ever want to review something, i just swap out the cards, and don't have to worry about putting the card back in.

Yep, I'm the same now. I bought two mini 0803's with the internal memory thinking why wouldn't I want internal memory and it was an obvious choice, but then when I started using it, I realised it was a mistake and the next one I got was without it.

I just took delivery of a street guardian there and was surprised it doesn't come with a suction mount. It had plenty of sticky things but very bare instructions on how to best mount it.

Had anyone got any tips? Is it worth taking the time to run the wires under the window rubber and across? With other dash cams, I've just held the wires away from controls quite crudely as I tend not to leave the cam in the car.

I got one recently. Used the mount and sticky pad that came with the camera. It worked a treat. I mounted it on the black dots just behind the rearview mirror and it's peeking out just below that.

On my car the cable I routed the cable along the headliner, down the nearside A pillar, side of the dash, under the passenger mat and to the cigarette lighter. It tucked in very easily behind the trim on my car but YMMV.

    Here's a pic of mine -

    NYWNAvs.jpg

I've got the polarising filter on it also. It takes down the dash reflections a bit.

Did Halford's install it for you?

If so, how much did it cost and does it switch on/off automatically with the ignition??

    Thanks

Sorry I'm only seeing this now, ION08.

Halfords chargs €35 to fit, but only if you buy the kit to hardwire it, with the camera (otherwise they just won't fit it, I believe). The kit costs €30 I think, but as part of a promotion they were giving away free fitting if you bought the kit.

So the cost of the camera + kit (with free install) is in and around €200. Then you reserve it online and you get the free carry pouch and memory card with it (assuming that offer is still running). Then you simply present your 10% off voucher (wink wink, nudge, nudge) and they knock about €20 off the price, which effectively means you get the fitting, hardwire kit, pouch and memory card for free if you buy the camera.

EDIT: Sorry, and yeah, it does power on and off with the ignition.

With regards to the camera not powering up or breaking or such, I'm sure it happens, but if you tap any button on the camera (the screen blanks after 30 secs), the screen comes back on for another 30 secs and you can see what its at. The camera also has a little light on it to indicate its recording/charging/etc.

It's not a bright light (presumably on purpose; so it's not a distraction) but if i stick my head over to the passenger seat I can see what it's up to without touching it, so I think I'm safe enough for the moment. I'll tap it once a month or so to make sure it's working or, transfer footage randomly during the summer time when a gorgeous girl walks by i want to just make sure it's still working. :D

EDIT: ION08 this post might help you out:

So I updated the firmware of the 0803 and looks like it's definitely a hardware problem. I think I'll have to replace it, I'd love to stick with the mini series given the size and popularity and the fact I already have the mount in place etc, but I understand there's a lot of "fakes" of this model about and given the problems I've had with the genuine Mini's I've owned, I'm not very confident ordering another ;(

Does anyone know a reliable and genuine source to get the latest model? Preferably Amazon given their brilliant return service should it have any issues..

Does anyone have or know where to get the BLACKVUE DR380G HD.

Has anyone any experience purchasing from dashcams.ie?

I quite like that particular camera so I'd like it. I can't see any other ones as discreet as that one that won't attract scumbags stealing it / mistaking it as a gps.

Was thinking of getting a mini 0806 but am unsure who actually manufacturers it. Had a look on Amazon and found numerous mini 0806 dash cams that look identical except for the name. Do they just have different firmware?

It's no oil painting but minimal work will have this through an NCT. Owner doesnt just wants it gone. It's had money spent on it over the last few years and drives really well, much better than you'd expect.

Selling my Vectra SRi 1.9CDTi. Lovely car to drive with the 150bhp engine and easy enough on juice too ~ 50mpg. I've remedied the main two engine issues on it, swirl flaps have been removed and blanked off and the EGR is blanked off also. ECU updated by reputable engine tuning specialist to prevent EML's for both. Car serviced regularly (8k miles) with correct GM dexos 2 5w-30 fully synthetic oil. Body very clean with no dents and interior is spotless. Just looking to trade up a few years and move to a slightly smaller car. Just passed NCT last week so has 2 years test and has 3 months tax. 4 new tyres fitted for NCT also.
