Yeah I thought David Byrne grew into that game as it went on and had some crucial breaking ball late on.
He did alright his man ran riot but he won the last two balls played into him critical really in a one point game and their main scoring outlet.

I was at the Ballymun/Castleknock match, and I'm fairly certain only Davy Byrne lined out for Ballymun. Definitely no Dean Rock, Philly or James McCarthy. John Small could have been standing in front of me and I wouldn't recognise him, so he may have lined out, but I don't think so.

Nice start for a newly promoted club :D

Nice handy start for youse in the SFC too :pac:

Hopefully he will be back hurling soon. I was attacked years ago in similar random way. Can take a while to get the oul headed sort so best of luck to him.

Anyone get upto PP this evening ... I see we finished with 13 men and a 6 point win ..

Was there myself, all 3 sending offs were silly second yellows, you'd be disappointed if the senior lads got sent to the line like that but you'd let the young fellas away with it, certainly wasn't a dirty game. Apart from the last 5 minutes of the first half when the Royals got it back to 6 apiece we were the better team, Con O'Callaghan was the stand out, got his goal with the last kick of the first half.

I was a bit worried for the opening ten minutes of the second-half. Meath were coming in waves of attack, but they only managed a point in the period. You'd be worried about that type of switch off against a decent (Kildare) Leinster side. We had a twenty minute period (around 23/24 onwards) where we only scored once.

Con O'Callaghan was fantastic I thought. Lorcan Molloy also made two very good saves. Spillane pitched in with a point. Enjoyable game.

Looks like Jack maybe clocking up the airmiles too

I'll believe it when I see it. It's been known since last year, that he was doing the hospital training part of his medical degree this summer & that that may impact his availability to the Dubs. I doubt if Gavin would had had him as involved up to now, if he was going to be scarpering completely during the summer. What would be the point of playing him now, when he'd just be holding up the process of finding his replacement? Not that someone like him, could ever be replaced like for like. :(

It was the Herald who broke the story first, just because the independant copied them doesn't mean anybody has actually verified it.

What a blow to the Dublin/ the Championship that would be.

If this is true (which nobody knows) then the right thing to do is support him, as was the case for ROC.

Sets a good example. Football is important but they have to live too. And without being overly crude, he'd get some fanny on a J1!

I don't think it's a traditional J1 he's going on where he'd be dicking about in some part of America for a summer. It's supposedly work/study related.

A medical degree is pretty demanding stuff, so I wouldn't be surprised exactly if he does have to go, though it certainly would seem strange given it seems like he's been involved enough so far to suggest he'll be there throughout the year. It could be a situation too where he is only gone for a shorter period of time at the beginning of the summer and might just miss out on the early part of the Leinster championship or something.

Rumour has it he is having trouble finding a hospital residency job, which he has to do as part of his medical degree. Hence the possibility of him going overseas to do it. It's not an unheard of situation, where there are more trainee doctors in Ireland, than there are jobs for them. He's not leaving by choice.

Maybe Her Maj could sort him out with something? Newry would be a handy enough commute. Is there a hospital up there? We could all put a good word for him, when we're up there next week. I'll be his PR person......Dr Jack "Flash" McCaffrey, you've seen him slash through your defenses. Now watch him slash through your clogged arteries ! :D

That's a shame, if true. Maybe he's staying involved then in the hopes that something will come up closer to home and he won't actually have to leave.

He'd be a big loss, he can change the pace of a game. Seems like a great guy too, tough as hell but a great attitude.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

Yep, his pace is really breathtaking. The telly just doesn't do it justice. I love when he gets the ball out at around the 65 and he sets off on one of his runs. All of Croke Park just buzzes for a few seconds, to see what he will do. You can actually feel the energy in the air and hear the anticipation of the crowd. Deadly so it is, so it is. Thankfully, we've a game in a couple of days, where I presume Gavin will be asked about it. It'll be good to put the speculation to bed, once and for all.

    And breathe....

According to this, Jack's time out forrdin, may only be for 6 weeks.

If Jack does go at some stage it is not like we have not got other wing back options there are plenty of them about.
Unlike the full back position with ROC's absent I am more worried about that if I am honest!

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Apart from Savage that's a championship looking team again . Hope to see all the young midfielders get a run again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,569 ✭✭✭✭ProudDUB

Yep. Be interesting to see who takes the frees, if Deano isn't there. Whether he is a regular starter in the summer again or not, we deffo need a Plan B for the frees & 45's, in case he is dropped, injured, sent off, suspended etc etc. I watched the last 10 minutes of the AI final from behind my hands, every time Berno and Cluxton stepped up to take them. They've been legendary for us in the past, but an All Ireland final is NOT the time for them to be kicking their first frees of the year.

I figure it will be Connolly/Cluxton for the long range frees, Bernard/Costello for the short frees?

Not so sure how I feel about Berno going back taking the frees. He's well capable, we all know that. But he had such a spectacular year last year, I don't want the pressure of being the free taker again, impact his possibly repeating it this year. Might not be a bad idea to let someone else take over for good and let them get used to doing it in high pressure game situations. Berno's only going to be around for a little while longer. We need to have free takers in place for the long term.

If Gavin has any sense he won't let Connolly near the 45's. He's superman at everything else but kicking off the ground is not his thing. He snatches at the ball.

For whatever reason Cluxton didn't seem to have much confidence last season. Certainly didn't strike the ball with the same conviction anyway. Hopefully he regains it because he can be excellent from distance.

Agreed Cluxton was way out of practice.
I disagree on Connolly though I distinctly remember one free he took in Croke Park from miles out with the side of the foot and it went straight over the black spot. Not only that, he took it instead of Cluxton who wanted to take it. Connolly is capable of some unbelievable stuff when the mood takes him.

If I was Dean Rock I would be very worried because if one/more of the starting forwards starting do well from frees and contribute from general play. He could be back on the bench.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Out of his hands? If yeah then i agree. He's very capable out of hand. Sometimes from distance too.

Off the ground is another matter entirely though. Someone can correct me here but didn't he spend a national league campaign (3 or 4 years ago) showing us how ****e he was, right and left, off the ground? I've never seen him strike through the ball with any fluency off the ground. He's certainly no Bryan Sheehan anyway!;)

I'd agree with that , think he did it last year in a game too, was doing well off one foot then switched to the other needlessly.
I don't like him taking frees either. Too much riding on him then. If he got sent off we'd be screwed.
If Cluxton got his form of three years ago back it would be my favourite choice from what I've seen.
I think O'Gara will take Rocks place.
Wouldn't mind Bernard on the short frees.
I don't know enough about Costello to know if he's consistent.
Certainly if you wanted to get into that forward line , being a good free taker would get you over the line.
Ideally we'd have an outfield free taker
