Just got a PM from a poster who says her Gran, who took early retirement, recently got a job in Marks and Spencer's as a retail assistant, despite having no previous experience in retail, and she loves the job. She found them much more receptive to applications from seniors than the other supermarkets she tried in her area.

    - Thanks for that info, that's exactly the type of info that is useful, and might be to others in the same situation as well.

I just thought of one - hotel reservations/reception. I worked alongside a 62 year old lady for 6 months in a 5 star hotel and I swear to God she could have sold snow to Eskimos. She was loved by everyone and always had return guests ask for her regularly. Now she was a little bit slower using the operating system but she got there - it just took her a little longer to complete a booking form, but she loved what she did!

In general, UK multi-nationals will have explicit non-discrimination policies - so will welcome older people just like younger people.

That said, some older people with engrained attitudes toward <<insert minority here>> will find it hard to work for them because they have to be polite to people they don't like.

fwiw, I'm in my late 40s, healthy and fit-enough though overweight. But at this stage, having worked sit-down office jobs for 25+ years, I couldn't face a job where I had to stand all day. Had a 12 hour retail contract for a while during the recession, and even four-hour shifts were murder. What a person is acclimatised to is relevant, not matter what the OP may think.

    Childminding
    Grinds for leaving cert
    Locum work - if a doctor/pharmacist etc
    Subbing in schools

Bear in mind that most jobs these days need a reasonable degree of computer literacy so make sure your over 55 person is well up in that area. I know lots of over 55's who are really whizzy on computers but I also know a few who can't/won't go near technology including PC or mobile phone.
