I am thinking of completely changing career and I am very interested in becoming a teaching assistant. I have looked online but can't find much information. Can anybody help.
What qualifications do I require, are there any jobs available. What is the salary.
Or is it a bad choice of employment?

    Hi last-minute
Know you didn't get reply here but just wondering if you found out any info on this or gone ahead with the career change? I'm in same predicament here, thinking of becoming a teaching assistant but no clue how to get started

There are no teaching assistants in the Irish education system at the moment. There are special needs assistants at this stage you would possible need a degree in early childhood education( which can be done part time ).

If you look at the requirements for an SNA post it wont say degree required they might look for a level 5 qualification, however you would be in competition with other candidates who have degrees it is becoming common.

There are jobs but it is not as simple as saying get the qualification and get a job experience is a big consideration.

Start by doing the level 5 part time and do lots of volunteering with anything that involves children.

Hi guys, stupid question but ive been out of the education system for a while so all these levels are new to me. when you say a level 5 qualification do you mean you have to have the level 5 in childcare or something related to teaching? Or any level 5 qualification? I have a masters degree which I believe would be level 6?

A Masters degree is level 9. Undergraduate degrees are level 8 and then there's a variety of other qualifications (diplomas, certificates etc.) that fall below that on the framework. However, a Masters in something entirely unrelated e.g. Science is not going to land you an SNA job. You need qualifications in child care/education and there's very little room for getting around that.
