I'd rather have a date that involved my penis being cut off than surround myself with the vacuous w@nkers that frequent that place.

    PM sent!

Finally somebody with the same kink as me. :)

Maybe go for a coffee ,or just to any quiet pub,
any pub that does not have loud tv on,
    eg sports ,racing .
The point of a first date is to see if there, s any spark or attraction there .
You need to be able to hear each other talk .
No need for a place as posh first dates channel 4 restaurant .
But notice how there,s no loud music in that restaurant .
Shelbourne is too posh and formal for the first date .
Any pub thats not too busy will do .

I haven't been on a first date in QUITE a while but my last one involved going to Starbucks in Omni and running out of things to say after 20 minutes, followed by awkward silence punctuated by the odd slurp of a frappichino. 2/10 would not recommend.
That being said, provided my date isn't a raging alcoholic and out to get utterly scuttered, I have few problems with going for a few quiet pints. My favorite pub in Dublin is Sweetmans (aka Messrs), but mainly during the day and not on weekends as it can get loud and crowded. The food is gorgeous, as is the in-house craft beers, there are plenty of little nooks for intimate chats and possible shifting and the food/drink is pretty reasonably priced.

I also once went on a date to the Guinness Storehouse. Whilst it was'nt a great date for other reasons I won't get into, I'd recommend it as not only do you get to learn how they make the black stuff, you can pull your own pint and if you're willing to brave the dizzying heights up to the Sky Bar, you can get a pretty incredible view out over Dublin. Bit expensive, though- €15 per adult last time I checked! D: Either that or the brewery tour in Sweetmans (which I've still never gone on) would be good.

Lastly, Fibbers on Parnell Street is a fun spot. I went to a foam party there once with a few college mates and it was great craic- we painted tribal symbols on each other's faces with the UV paint they had laid out and moshed to Disturbed. Ahh, memories!

I once broke up with an ex in one of those nooks.
I suppose you could call it our last date!

I have to say, most times I'm in Cafe en Seine it's full of tourists......

Don't all the "vacuous w@nkers" go to Sam's Bar and Bar 37 now? (although I think they've also become dated hotspots now too.......)

Cinema date is a weird one. You sit beside someone you don't know for almost 2 hours in silence.

Aye. But you get a good 2hr sniff.

Tells me all I need to know anyway.:D

This thread is a bit nuts TBH. It could only work if we all lived in the same town! You have loads of Dublin bar suggestions and one for Limerick.

What's with this bar crap? Skip it. Travelodge is a great spot, you can get a room for less than 40 quid.

    +1

I think anyone who thinks Cafe en Seine is the place to be seen is seriously showing their age.

Such a weird crowd there these days. I did go their on a 2nd date with my current BF as we'd been in the Bailey earlier, and the date was going well we didnt want to finish just yet! I had a hunch that even on a Saturday night where everywhere else is rammed, you'd be able to get a table in Cafe en Seine and I was right - a sure sign that a place has lost it!

    Where is Sam's?

You might know is as Samsara - it got revamped.

Does anyone else think that the whole Dawson Street scene is a bit dated now?

Ah of course! Wasn't that part of a hotel? I stayed in it once years ago.

I agree that the street has become dated. It's a shame Fixx is gone. I wrote many an essay in that place.

Yes, it was La Stampa I think. Its now called The Dawson.
That whole place had a number of different names over the years, their restaurant especially changed names a lot!

I just think with the advent of the whole hipster scene, try hard bars like that are a bit out of fashion, although I'm sure they still have a market.

To answer the original question - my first date with my bf was supposed to be Cassidys on Camden st but it was too full and we ended up in Davitts.

I wouldnt be into anything too fancy/stressful for a first date. Just somewhere cosy where you can actually chat. And yes, I got my round in :)

Yeah, for sure, but I never overly frequented any of those spots anyway.

I HATE Bar 37. The most uncomfortable place ever for a night out. Waaaaay too packed. To be fair though, the setting/decor is quite funky so I would imagine it'd be a nice spot for an early/quiet drink. I popped in there one evening with a friend after early dinner so it was about 8/9pm on a Wed/Thurs evening and we were sitting at the bar. We were talking about alcohol (I'm a little bit obsessed, but not in an alcoholic way :D in a curiosity way...). The barman heard us chatting and got involved and started letting us try samples of various whiskey's/vodkas (this happens me a lot - I've had this happen in 3 other bars!! see it pays to be interested in alcohol!). He even opened a full bottle of Ciroc to let us try it! haha

I love PMacs for a night out. It's a bit hipster-y but it's so relaxed and such a good vibe. It doesn't matter what you look like. I've been in there glammed up, or in casual gear on nights out and no one bats an eye... No Name Bar is good too.

One of my fave spots in Dublin is The Liquor Rooms, but even that's getting a bit too popular now. It's great cause there's no cover charge and it's open till like 3/4am...
I remember when it opened first, I was in there, me and a friend were sitting by the bar. We'd been there for HOURS (like from 10:30 and it was heading towards 4am now) and I asked the barman what time they were open till - his answer was, "what time can you drink till".... :D hahaha
He came back a min later and said they'd probably close around 5. I think nowadays they start kicking people out around 3:30 ish??

House isn't too bad as it's got the various spaces - the main bar, the outdoor area and the nightclub downstairs so you can choose what suits your mood.

Foam Cafe near Jervis might be a quirky place for a first date.

Seconded. One of my favourite pubs in town. There or the Gin Palace is pretty decent too.

Ended up in Vintage cocktail club, it was great spot very nice and cosy and classy,
As someone once said " total panty dropper " although that didn't happen : )

Hope you tried the ginger beef. Jesus that stuff is incredible.

A pub is great idea for a first date. Not too formal, and you can find out if they are gonna pricks about drinking in later dates. However, not a very crowded place, with somewhere decent to sit, maybe some food if ye get peckish and where the music isn't pumping like crazy.

No point in faking it going doing something cultural like a museum or whatever if they are pioneers and like the arts or whatever and you like lashing back 10 euro pitchers of Tuborg every Friday, Saturday & Sunday and midweek when the Champions League is on.

Would have happened in the Locke Bar in Limerick.
