    Monday 8th Feb
    5km
    43.25

Bit of a mixed bag! Foot felt ok while I was running, couple of twinges here and there but not much unless I thought about how it felt, not enough pain to distract me from daydreaming!
Was happy enough, even thou I can really feel the difference in how my legs and lungs worked from 2 weeks ago. But when I stopped the pain was back again, settled a bit now but still there
Think it might be time to take the advice on physio, even if all they can do is tell me it ll sort itself in time! :)

A bad week for running. I could lie and say it was all about resting my foot, but realistically a lot of my usual enthusiasm and eagerness to go out just wasn't there... the confidence that I had while I was off work studying has been hit massively by my foot injury. Along with the running the diet and strength exercising has slipped too. Been a tough few weeks on a few fronts and everything went a bit off....

Decided I was going this am no matter what, that meant out of bed and straight out the door... Forgot to eat or drink, stupid mistake really. I put the time in the post but the wind makes it quite redundant, never ran in anything like it! Wasn't exactly an enjoyable run, spent a lot of time thinking about how far I'd fallen in two weeks... Most of that is in my head thou. Foot felt better than it has, still a bit niggly and sore when I stopped but nothing compared to before thank god!

So now... Time to stop feeling sorry for myself! Starting with another run tomorrow, a few planned for during the week and an appointment with a physio Wednesday. All going well I'll start a proper plan in two weeks

    Sunday 14th Feb
    5km
    41.41min

Nothing exciting during this! Took no convincing or giving myself talking to's to leave the house which is a good sign!
Did some resistance stuff last night so pretty much everything hurt after this, except my foot! So all in all a lot happier than I was 24hrs ago

First run since I hurt my foot where the legs and lungs felt like they knew what they were doing! Really enjoyable despite torrential rain. Not even the slightest twinge in my foot :) will be a very short conversation with the physio tomorrow... This is where it used to hurt before making an appointment seemed to fix things :p

Very much a good news/bad news kinda post.... Start with the bad news

Went to a physio on Wednesday, he found one very tender spot on my 1st metatarsal and a couple of movements that aggregates the pain, which suprised me after days of no pain. He suggested an X-ray and mri to rule out a stress fracture... X-ray was normal and hoping I can get the Mir sorted early this week. I really don't think it's broken but hard to ignore the expert.

Which is why I really shouldn't be telling ya about this...

    Saturday 20th Feb
    Malahide Parkrun
    5km
    36.56 (pb)
    Splits: 7.01, 7.35, 8.00, 7.44, 6.34 (.89km)

I've never woken up at 8am without five alarms but I did this am! In the early morning haze I got it into my head that I'd been running for weeks on my ?fracture and if it was fractured I won't be running for many weeks, so what harm could one more run do! Bad idea I know but off I went
Can't remember a massive amount about the run, apart from spending most of it chasing a 7 year old and her dad, who beat me in the end!
New 5km pb, even if it measured quite short on the watch, prob the trees and stuff. Not sure what my previous time really is (jingle bells estimate 37.40, a random run of 37.20 that I never quite believed). Either way definitely my best time. Waiting for the official Parkrun time.

Now the really bad news: forgot my barcode so my pr at Parkrun will remain in the 38's til I get back again!
Edit: forgot I wouldn't get an official time, my 7 year old nemesis finished in 36.48, and the next person with a code was 36.51, so I'll go with 36.50. Never forgetting the barcode again!

All teeing up quite nicely to start my plan on Monday week. Might have to review my aim of 35mins 5km given today. Just praying for a normal Mri now!!! :)

About your foot .... the stress fracture will not show on an X-ray for at least 4+weeks until the healing process has started to show the peristeal reaction around the bone. The MRI will show if there is a stress fracture much earlier than that (but of course it's a good bit more expensive). Be aware that you really could have been running on a s.fx. for all those weeks; I know because I ran on-and-off on my 2nd metatarsal for more than 5 weeks and to be honest it was rarely above 4 on the 10-scale ... those internet runners posting about the agony of a s.fx. can be taken with a pinch of salt.

Congratulations on the park run time :)

(and stress fractures of the 1st metatarsal are not so common, so it might be nothing)

Hey! Thanks for that, was wondering what the science behind needing an mri was. At worst my pain has probably been 5 or 6, and for short periods, maybe we'be just got high pain thresholds! :p
If there is something there it could well have been going on before all this, I'm still putting my money on it being nothing though :)

Probably not ... but of course if it is a s.fx., then to keep pounding away will eventually cause it to turn into a real fracture, so be careful.

Normal Mri! Yay! Some bruising around the part that was sore but no fracture. Found out on Friday and worked all weekend so started back today. New plan, new runners, back on track :) today day 1 of the Hal hidgeon intermediate 5km training plan

    Monday 29th Jan
    5km
    42.59mins

Nothing too exciting, felt good to get back out! Legs felt a bit tired but putting that down to the new shoes being a bit stiff

    1st March
    5x400m at 1 mile pace
    Splits: 6.27, 6.25, 6.26, 6.47, 6.39

Day 2 of the plan, first day of March. Mayo decided to celebrate with... Snow at the start of my run and hailstones at the end!
Done 1.5km warm up, but was still freezing after, it was snowing after all! Fired away with intervals, felt very tough the whole way through. I set off too fast each time and ended up limping to the end. Something to work on next time.
Not sure what pace I should have been aiming for so not really sure whether to be happy with that or not! Happy to be in out of the hailstones though, there's marks on my arms from where they were hitting so hard, one of my stranger running experiences! 1.6 km to warm down. Just over 7km in just under an hr in total

    Wednesday 3rd March
    5km
    42.38mins

Day 3! Nothing too exciting about this, except another snow/hailstone storm! I'm Setting off too fast and not able to keep up the pace for the full distance again, something I need to look at a bit

Great news on the mri and good luck with the plan. Just keep the easy everyday runs at a very comfortable relaxed effort, and save your energies for the faster workouts and you'll be flying!

No snow this time, only rain and lots of it! Nothing exciting about this one either. 5 miles tomorrow to round off week one :)

    Saturday 5th March
    8km
    67.51mins

Day 5! Longest run since I hurt my foot. Really enjoyable. Can't remember much specifics, but had enough energy to sprint the last 200m and had another few km's in the tank :) only about 30seconds slower than the 8km I did just before hurting myself so happy to see not much fitness has gone in the few weeks with little/no running!
Streets of castlebar 5km next Sunday, looking forward to it now!

    Sun 6th March
    5k
    44.17mins

So when planning out next week I realised how hard it was gonna be to fit everything in around work/life/courses/my race next week. Decided to get a jump start on week 2 by getting one of the easy 5km out of the way today. In hindsight should have taken the rest day after what was a big jump in mileage for me this week. Well, we live and learn :) took it very easy so as not to affect tomorrow's tempo run much.

Think I might try move to weekly logging, to try annoy all you good people less!

    Mon 7th March
    30 min tempo
    3.83km

So my first proper tempo run. Wasn't really sure how to approach it so decided to try 10min easy, 10 middle effort, 5 fast, 5 slow to finish, aiming for 9, then 8, then 7min/km, but as per Hal hidgon without looking at the watch.
First section felt slow and heavy and difficult, average 8.35. Second section was really tough, average 6.55min/km, was wrecked when it was done.
3rd section was a failure, after 2 mins something decided I couldn't keep going fast and had to slow down, 2mins at 6.29min/km.
After 2/3 mins I felt fine and could have picked things up again.

    Things I learnt today:
I shudda trusted the plan and took the rest day
I'm no good at estimating my pace/effort

Bit disappointed but learnt a lot for next time. Seems I did it all too fast and the blew up a bit. Will do better next time!

    Wednesday 9th March
    8km
    68.58mins

Was on call Tuesday day/night but knew straight after work was the only time I'd get this run in. So left work 10am Wednesday and was out by 11. Was tough work, but probably due to being tired from no sleep for 24hrs than the run itself, took it nice and handy. Was glad when it was over!

    Friday 11th March
    5km
    43.50mins

Was at a very intense 2 day course thurs and Friday. Ate too much on the way home Friday evening and felt guilty when I finally got in for over-indulging and ruining my chances of getting this run done, because it was tonight or miss it, given the race on Sunday. After a while I decided to go out anyway. Nice slow pace cuz It was much too close to eating too much. Another run I was glad to have squeezed in as it could too easily have been skipped

Streets of castlebar 5km tomorrow. I'd be lying if I said I didn't really want a pb (previous from 2 weeks ago 36.50) but not sure what the course is like, I'm presuming its gonna be hilly given all of castlebar is so I'll take whatever I get :) have booked a run in st Anne's on good Friday for MND as the half way test for this plan so that will be the big one :)

    Sunday 13th March
    Streets of castlebar 5k
    35.17mins
    6.52, 7.06, 7.20, 7.19, 6.37

90 second pb!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely over the moon with that! :)
Woke up this morning very virally, cough, runny nose, feeling a bit crap. Has been coming for a day or two but thought I was over the worst. Never done a race that wasn't first thing in the morning so wasn't really sure how to go about food ect. Had overnight oats at 10ish with coffee and loads of water, got ready and wandered down to the start line, only five mins away. Picked up my race number (unlucky 13!) and got my finishers teeshirt (felt like a bit of a fake getting it before I started!). Had no bag or anything with me so no choice but to put it on, wasn't risking losing my first ever race teeshirt! Start was a bit messy cuz the roads weren't closed yet so no one was really sure where to go.

So off we go! I couldn't really figure out where the course went but figured I'd know most of it and have an idea where we were going once we started! I was very wrong!
The first km was almost all uphill, and not little inclines, big huge hills. Most people around me were walking the hills and running the small bits in between. Tried to keep a decent even pace, hoping that what went up must come down at some point!
Km 2 was more of the same, more up than down. Got a bit tricky trying to cross roads that were open again with cars that weren't in the humour of helping struggling runners, despite the best efforts of the very friendly stewards! Spent most of this and the next km passing and being passed by the same 2 woman.
Km 3 was back where I knew. I knew it was mostly slightly downhill from here, with a few smaller hills, was knackered at this stage thou, and struggling with a stitch so times suffered for this and km 4, despite the course being easier. Keep trucking away as we came out of town and started around the lake. Some supporters along here really really helped!
Km 5 and I was thanking God it was almost done. Spent a lot of it thinking about something I read on here last night (FBOT maybe?) that u can either enjoy the race or the pb, I certainly wasn't enjoying the race at this stage!
Sped up again, and managed to sprint to the end for about 200m, passed the clock at 35.15. Nearly hugged the kid who ran towards me with a water bottle, it was very much needed!!! Chip time was 35.17, probably because me and my two nemesis passed at the same time pretty much

So so happy with that! A good pb, on a very very tough course, much harder than I'm used to! Sets me up well for the next 6 weeks of the plan, hopefully the elusive sub 35 will come sooner rather than later!

    Sorry for the essay btw!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,420 ✭✭✭Ososlo

Delighted for you! Very well deserved and on a flatter course with less obstacles you'd easily go sub 35.
Great to see your hard work bringing improvements! Keep it up!
