It's Cowra POW Camp NSW Australia, formerly used to house Japanese POWS in WWII.

It was the site of one of the biggest POW breakouts.

I got into trouble before for putting up "non descrip" pic of Cowra. :D

    That's the one.

1,104 Japanese prisoners tried to escape by literally just storming the fence and 231 of them were killed, along with 4 Australian soldiers. Pretty gruesome incident. Loads of them managed to escape but were all rounded up. The biggest POW escape during WWII, I believe.

Not sure now if it was Cowra or town on the way there, but I remember eating sushi and thinking how much things had changed since WWII.

Back then you would have been run out of the town for eating enemy food.
Why am I suddenly thinking of French Fries :o

It's wide, it's in the South, it looks like the Rhone.

edit : not South South though.

re-edit : sorry don't want to confuse people, don't think it's the Rhone anymore. Most stone bridges were bombed.

    Nope not the Rhone.

Yep the Allies took out the bridges out to delay German re-enforcements getting to the South to stop Operation Dragoon - the landings around St Tropez.

Yeah it was. I've travelled around most of France and have been in Bergerac and some towns on the Dordogne. Ah well.
