Bad week for Tipperary. Both Dundrum House and Aherlow House a hotel have officially closed their doors and will no longer be catering for any weddings. Including those already booked!

    Anybody here have it booked?

Oh no what a shame both for locals and for any who has booked.

I remember going to see Aherlow when we were looking and it was a shame as the setting was lovely but the place was so run down and damp... Didn't leave a great impression

Same here, we were thinking of having a wedding there. Went for a weekend there and really liked it, as a relaxing and quiet weekend, but found it really run down and poorly run.

I remember going into the main room beyond reception and it was a bit like the shining everyone turned to look at us..

Still a shame I wonder what will happen to it will It just be left there to run down even more.. Were the rooms nice there A2

It was a run down country house. It was nice and cosy and a change from the normal Hilton/Marriott blandness. For a break away for us it was nice, as we just wanted a quiet weekend and enjoyed what remained of the woods to walk in. But as a wedding venue, it was not going to work.
Room was nice, but dated and had a nice view of the woods.
The Bar was run down and quiet. TV wasn't working, which was annoying as there were about ten of us who wanted to watch a rugby match, we eventually huddled around a small tv in the library to see it. Food service in the Bar was slow and food was.. OK..
Restaurant was nice, but nothing to write home about.
Check out was a disaster. There were six or seven couples who wanted to check out at about the same time and the reception staff took almost an hour to process them all. No one had any issues with their bills, everyone just looked, went 'that's fine, here's my card', but it still took that long.

It seemed that they were due to be upgrading and refurbing the place, but I have no idea if any of that happened. I just hope that some of the other couples that were booking their weddings while we were there have had them already.

I was actually present at a wedding there as a guest and was so so impressed with the food. You're both right, it should have got a major facelift during boomtime and maybe that would have carried them through to now as the decor wouldn't have looked so rundown. The veranda during summer truly was spectacular for bbqs etc so I'm at a loss as to why even a small bit of investment wasn't put in. If they had a decent drinks reception area looking on the view and changed where the main bar was I think it would have done well. We stayed in the lodges and were very impressed, big, warm, everything you need and so reasonable. I believe Kilcoran Lodge outside Cahir have started to honour some of the last minute bookings (2 couples getting married next weekend) but they seem to have the same issue, heavily reliant on having good weather and allowing people take in the views of the woods and Knockmealdowns while the sun shines. I will say this though... Joanne in Aherlow was an excellent event manager and knew her stuff to a tee. Hope she is scooped up!

Closing around the end of March unless the hotel is bought.

Oh I thought as the restaurant closed its doors last week, that the hotel has closed as well.

Couples who were left in limbo after the closure of a Tipperary hotel where they were due to have their wedding - have been told that their receptions will be honoured.

Aherlow House Hotel has been sold to Dublin hotel operator Adrian Shanagher who says he is committed to honouring all future weddings that were booked with the previous tenant company.

Around forty couples, who had paid deposits ranging from €1,500 – €3,000, were left scrambling for a new wedding venue when the hotel suddenly closed on 9 February.

The sale, confirmed by receivers Grant Thornton, comes a week after the closure.

Shanagher confirmed that he will offer couples full credit against their future wedding cost in Aherlow House Hotel for any deposits they lost with the previous operator, Auburn Hotels (Aherlow) Limited.

The sale will also secure the employment of the 47 former employees of the hotel. The new owner now plans to contact former employees and all those who have weddings booked directly as soon as possible.

Shanagher is expected to immediately begin an investment and refurbishment programme at the property and expects to reopen to guests and patrons on 3 March 2016.

    Good news about Aherlow!
Hopefully they'll refurbish the hotel because it's in a lovely location and all it really needs is a bit of TLC. Good news for the couples as well as the staff.

Find it hard to believe that the sale wasn't in progress when the liquidator closed its doors. Had the hotel stayed open, all this bad publicity could have been avoided and the new owners would have had a hotel in a much stronger position.

Of course it was. No sale goes through that quivkly. but now they dont have to fulfil any previous obligations eg to staff. A very cynical way to operate.

I heard there was a fire in Dundrum house hotel and that's why some weddings were cancelled? So was that just a rumour so and in fact the whole place just closed down?

Not sure about it being definitely closed but there was definitely a fire recently
