Was making an order on Amazon tonight and used the AddressPal address. Then I remembered the €50 charge for an oversized item and panic set in. No way would I sleep at night with the chance of that!!

I guess the dimension sizes are so restrictive because most post offices are small and can't store many large parcels. But like others said why not do a Parcel Wizard and deliver straight to your door? Like what they do everyday for the last zillion years!!??!

Won't be using this service unless I'm fanatically desperate for an item that can't be sent to Northern Ireland.

Oh, and Amazon tried to delete the ID number when I was adding the address so watch out for that.

Did it to me too. clearly the word "AddressXXX" in the address is triggering as a probable mistake in the data entry by Amazon's servers. Between this and the sheer length of the user ID, AnPost really chose an appallingly bad format for this. The >25cm box dimension as oversize and costing €50 is also ridiculous. Relatively smallish items often come with foam and such around them making it near impossible to be sure what size of box you will receive in the post.

So could I order a TV and just take the 50 euro hit? Haven't seen anything on a maximum size for oversized parcels?

    19. What are the size and weight limits for standard AddressPal

    Max Dimensions 72cm X 31cm X 25cm.
    Maximum weight, 20kg.
An Post will contact you if your item exceeds the service dimensions.
Oversized items will be charged at €50 per item and can be collected at your local Delivery Service Unit. You will be contacted by An Post, by phone in advance to notify you that your item is available for collection at the Delivery Service Unit.
    Oversized items maximum dimensions:
    Length: 1.5 metres.
    Length + Girth: 3 metres.
To calculate Girth: 2 x (Depth + Width).
Items that exceed these dimensions will be refused at our UK Hub.

Notice on their sign up page they included 'Prof'and 'Dr' in their list of titles .Only ever seen Mr;Mrs and Miss before, rather odd.

As regards the dimensions does the parcel have to be within all three limits?

Giving that you have to provide ID when you collect the parcel, maybe they want to make sure the name on the system matches the name on the Passport?

Some people have their academic titles in the passport which can cause problems if it's read and the name does not match.

regarding the max size allowed before being oversized, how big is that, anything people would use daily as a size reference, microwave sized? toaster?

Somebody mentioned the height of two reams of copier paper is around 25cm so that's a good indicator - once any one side is bigger than that, it's oversized :(

That to me is the biggest drawback.

About the size of a 32" telly screen,a foot in depth.

thanks folks, its grand for 3.50 though ,from the uk.. small items can cost 10 -12 euro on ebay for postage.. they should have a graded scale though,up to 50..not just bam 50 euro.

some car parts are hard to get in ireland but easy get in the uk,small niggly stuff.. this will be great for that

Can imagine the bad publicity they'll get when people start getting stung for fifty quid.Extremely unfair given we have no control over packaging.

    stupid double posts

There seams to be a bug that is you use "quick reply" your post is posted twice.

Use "Post Reply" button and it will only post it once in my experience.

Since when do companies trading in Ireland care about bad publicity?

The best option is to ensure that you use the appropriate vendor for shopping when you use Addresspal, one which can tell you the shipping dimensions and not just the items dimensions.

So Amazon is out (I think on purpose as it would ruin AnPost's deal with them).

I made a boo-boo and got an item that's bigger by one of the dimensions (but smaller on the other 2).

I'll see what they say I guess. Should be getting the call in the middle of the week.

That's better. Its the combined effect of the sizes i.e. the bulk rather than one individual dimension.

That somebody needs to re-evaluate his measuring skills.

sometime I find that I can get a courier from the UK to Ireland , cheaper then using " motels" . recently 8 sterling for a 1m long package. way cheaper then " motel" type over size charges

I recently got an oversized item delivered to parcel motel.... It was £14.99 NI & then €7 from PM... delivery to Ireland would have been €49.99...I was delighted!! :) especially as my local Nitelink depot is less than 15 miles away!!

I got an oversized item that was largely an empty box and was charged 47 euro but you could have fit a refugee in the box so I sucked it up. If they tried to charge me that for a 25cm package I would never have used them again.

Parcel Wizard I find the best as they del. to the door and you can change the address or hold the package with them if you are not there on the day of del.

Parcel Connect is OK but the Spar/Centra shops I use haven't a clue as how to use the system. They don't notify you that the item is in ready for collection so you have to monitor the website for updates. On the plus side as they don't understand the system I never have been charged when collecting the package despite telling them multiple times by email!

Nearest Parcel Motel is over 40kms from me. I only used them for returns to the UK via Collect+.

This new service from An Post isn't great due to limited by Post Office opening hours/location. But as others say, the mainland UK address might be handy.

I got a few free deliverys also with Parcel Connect thanks to untrained staff also, lack of notifications was enough for me to give it up.

A man in Cork called me this evening.
The package is over-sized on one dimension, so would be charged €50.
I asked for them to return it to Amazon.
    Seems to have worked.
