Tyres on 2008 accord

    my brother has a 2008 accord a pretty high spec one

    the tyres under it are 225/40R18, pretty low profile, the car is top spec and came from UK

    he has put a bulge in one or two of them even when driving around country roads, regular driving nothing racy or sporty

    question- are low profile tyres more prone to getting damaged on Irish roads ?

    what less damage prone tyres could he fit to the car for irish conditions ?

    I have a 2008 Mk7 , Mine came with 17" wheels on it with 225/45-17 and they were still too hard a ride and prone to pothole damage, I changed mine to 16" steelies with 205/55-16 as I don't really care about the look of the car as much as being able to get where I want to go.
    I think he will be able to go to a 225/50-17 which should make the ride a lot more comfortable and less chance of pothole damage.
    FYI the tyre profile is a percentage of the tyre width so a 225/50 has a sidewall which is 50% of the 225mm tyre width i.e. 112mm in height.
    his currently are 90mm sidewall height. so near enough another inch in sidewall if he fitted 17" with 225/50 tyres.
    Tyres will be less expensive as well in a 17" vs 18'"

    No. Damage to tyres is solely down to the driver. Tyres are tough and will take the odd unavoidable knock but when careless drivers constantly hit potholes and drive recklessly on poor roads the tyres will inevitably suffer.

    I have had everything from 12" to 19" wheels/tyres and have never ever damaged a tyre in over 25 years of driving.

    I disagree,
    Pothole damage is driver related but sidewall height plays a big part in tyre life on bad roads.
    Bulges in a tyre show that some of the internal structure of the tyre have been damaged by being cut.
    The more height in a tyre the more its resistant to being cut against the rim of a pothole.

    Yes, driving slowly and carefully helps but if you take a pothole and run two wheels through it, say a 195/65 -15 and a 225/40-18 the chances of rim and tyre damage will be far greater with the low profile tyre.
    There is less sidewall flex with a low profile tyre, thats why they give sporty handling characteristics.

    On less than perfect surfaces, they result in much harsher suspension and resultant discomfort.

    On less that perfect surfaces, low profile tyres behave unpredictably, if you have to brake suddenly.
