    Ask on the UK Volvo forums for direct owner experience. You won't find too much specific knowledge of them on here, although the fact the Gardai are still using identical cars which they purchased in 2008 is a positive sign and tells you something.

    That generation of D5 diesel engine is a bit heavy on the juice, but pretty reliable by modern diesel standards. A common problem on it is a snapping fan belt issue which can write off the engine but otherwise it is a durable unit and highly capable of covering the miles.

    I have a 05 S80, D5 2.4....most frugal engine I've had yet on juice, considering the weight of the car its a miser on juice....

    That is because your car has the first generation D5 engine that ran from 2002 to '05. They updated it to Euro IV after that and while it had more power, there were compromises in fuel efficiency.

    Cheers, that's good to know. I would have been oblivious when trying to upgrade. What year did they change?
    For that matter, why on earth did they change a bullet proof engine that has more than enough power anyway!
