    The Mist?

Correct. Different ending to the book apparently. I loved the ending. Really made that movie stand out.

That was some ending alright. Its a long time since I read the story, but I think they just keep searching for other survivors......I can't really remember though.

Academic with an interest in antiquing makes a bid for an unusual gold plated 1st century chest, but faces stiff competition.

Here is an easier one while you are thinking of the Detective one:

Avid Bowler needs a new rug.

Ah beaten by language. I was going to guess that but "bid" threw me. I was thinking of an auction and I did not remember an auction scene. I guess we mean "bid" in terms of making an attempt - not an offer.

I was also going to guess POTC - Dead mans chest - since the "stiff" competition in that movie were actual stiffs. So I thought it was a pun. But again "bid" was throwing me :)

Damn. I searched the thread for the word title and got no results! But since the user above answered with a GIF and not words - perhaps the same thing happened earlier? :)

Ah the only clue I can think of is a complete give away. At least to those using google to work out the answers :) But here it goes. The crime in question was a kidnapping. The kidnapper hires the detective to make it look like he wants the kidnapped person found. But hires the crap detective thinking he could never solve the case.

    Star Wars?

No. I edited my post to be a bit less ambigious.

    Not 2001 again? :)

Or is it Back to the future because when he goes to the future - that is now our past - they had futuristic technology that we do not yet have? Hover boards my rectal cavity.
