Nest thermostat just installed - questions!

I had a Nest thermostat installed yesterday, and I'm puzzled a bit by it.

Find it hard to get my head away from simple timing of the boiler and working on temperatures instead.

Anyway, one question I have is the scheduling..... does this only kick in after one week when the thing has "learned"? I turned it down last night going to bed, and scheduled 18 degrees for this morning at 8am - but by 8.30 still no heating on.... I had assumed that since the temperature had fallen well below 18, the schedule would kick it on at or before 8am?

Also, once the desired temperature has been reached (I have it on at the moment aiming for 17 degrees), how far does the temperature have to fall before it turns the boiler back on again? I had it on yesterday, it got to the required temp, but the heating never went on again and I was bloody frozen! It was still showing the same (or nearly) temperature hours later, but it was WAY colder.

I know it's only 24 hours in, and maybe I need to give it more time - but at the moment I just seem to be manually selecting random temps to make it turn the heating on.

Do I need to give it time to "learn"? I don't really have a schedule - I do shift work and am in and out fairly randomly - so I'm not sure how successful this "learning of habits" thing is going to be.....

Anyone with experience of these things who can reassure me a bit??

When you scheduled it for 8am this morning to be 18C, did you check the schedule and ensure you had the right day and it saved the time and temp?

When it came up to temperature (17C), and you say that after it switched off and the house cooled down again, what temperature was the Nest displaying, both in terms of the current temperature and the desired temperature?
(you say WAY colder, but if you turned the Nest up or down slightly, did the actual temp change at all? Did it change since then?

Generally, in my experience, once the temp drops 0.5C lower than desired, the heating kicks back on. Once it is reached again, it will turn off the boiler.

If the actual temp the Nest is displaying is not changing, it could be a fault.
It doesn't need to learn to know what temp it actually is. The learning part is only about learning when it thinks you will be adjusting the temp (so if you adjust it to 18C every Tuesday at 5pm, after 3 or 4 weeks of you manually doing that, it will do it for you. Also, it learns how long it takes to heat your home, so if you set it for 18C at 8am, it will eventually learn that that means the heating needs to come on at 6am as it will take 2 hours to reach the desired temp (for example).

I have a strange problem with my Nest recently (had it since launch) - for some reason it comes on on a Tuesday afternoon and sets itself to 17C even though there is nothing in the schedule. Once it learns, it should update the schedule.

For irregular shift work, I think the main advantage is being able to remotely turn it on and off. The auto-away will probably kick in and override your temp.

Thanks very much for the detailed reply!

To your first question, yes I had checked the schedule, and it was definitely 8am this morning, Tuesday, 18 degrees. The Nest was showing a temp in the living room of about 10 or 11 degrees when I checked it at 8am, and I left it till nearly 8.30am but it never switched the heating on.

To your second question - when the heating switched off yesterday I can't remember what the figures were - the Nest seemed to think that the room temperature hadn't changed much, although it was noticeably colder.

It brought the room up to 17 this morning, has switched the boiler off, and it's chilling down again now but no sign of the boiler restarting. It's showing the room as at 17.5 degrees, but the heat has been off for about an hour and it's definitely cooler than when the heating went off.

I've set another schedule for 12pm today, for 19 degrees, so will see if that kicks it into action. Maybe I'm missing some "activate" or "save" function, but the the temp/time are showing on the week's schedule page.

    It's all so bloody confusing!

I've been doing a lot of reading in the website, and have actually switched off the auto-schedule function as I really don't think it'll work for my lifestyle. However as I understand it I should be able to time things using the schedule page.... here's hoping it works at 12pm.....

If it is still giving trouble, I would be get on to the Nest support. They are pretty reasonable, and it sounds like things are not working right.
They may suggest a factory reset so best give that a try before getting on to them.

Once your schedule shows the temp, it should get to that temp by that time. The only reason I can think that it would be cool down after reaching the temp is if it set to get to a lower temp in the next couple of hours (for example, if it gets to 18C at 8am and your schedule has it to be 12C by 11am, it may be thinking it needs 3 hours to get there so from 8.01am, it doesn't come back on. That is the only thing that makes sense to me.

Another couple of things to check:
In the history page of the Nest webpage or app, does it show as coming on any time around 8am (the day only gets updated overnight, but you should be able to see Tuesdays report)?

Also, the Nest controller needs to connect to the Heatlink which is connected to your boiler. If these are not close by, it might be worth moving them closer to continue your testing. I wonder if the controller cant connect to the HeatLink, will it just ignore the settings.

Thanks again for the detailed reply!

Seems like there was indeed a software problem with the thermostat. I finally found a number for Nest support, who were very helpful indeed, and after a long day of testing various theories the whole system was reset, and (fingers crossed) seems to be working properly now.

I'm still figuring out how to best work the whole thing - it'll take a lot of getting used to! - but at least it seems to be doing what it's meant to.

    Cheers!
