A guy with nothing to do arrives in the big city looking for somewhere to go, but finds nowhere to stay. Everyone feels a bit sad.

    Nope.

Extra hint - he visits an ex girlfriend and several strangers, most are glad when he leaves.

    Extra extra "
    MAGGIE! MAGGIE!"

Not sure of that one but you've reminded me of another macabre gem.

"I've written a letter to Daddy...whose address is heaven above" sung by a ghastly has-been who serves dead birds for supper.

    Nope.
Could be one of the best movies many never saw. Several awards but robbed of an oscar for best actor

Set in London, a lot more clothing than it might suggest.

Bill Murray is in this film or the guy from Sideways.

A man wants to do business with some Americans and goes all out to impress them. Things go wrong leading them to think he is not up to it so they walk out on the deal. He tells them he is going to do business with the Germans instead. In the end he probably doesn't.
From last night, Captn Midnight left it open for someone else. That's not a hint btw. ( no Enda Kenny's were harmed during the making of this film, ta Mansize)

Is the above clue for the same film as the clue you gave where the man meets an ex girlfriend?

    I'm getting confused.

    a Mike Leigh masterpiece.
Well worth watching, Thewliss has disappointed me in everything since, having given his all. A young Ewen Bremner gives his best performance too.
