Shocked by how many people on here think this Garda's behaviors was acceptable. The cameraman wasn't looting, rioting, chanting. The fact that he was there at all didn't warrant violence. The Garda had a lot to take in and not very long to do so. I'm not going to demonise him, but he reacted on a wrong impulse.

Journalists have an obligation to be as close to the Centre of this stuff as possible. If I was him, I'd be making a report.

The ONE guard in this situation is not the issue here, the anti pegida crowd are just using that to deflect from the thuggish behavior of their members yesterday, bunch of cowards chasing a small group and attacking them. plus it looked like a few locals joined in just to have a go at the Guards, these locals would have just as easily joined the pegida side if it meant having a go at the Guards.

The Guards do a great job, they were to easy on the thugs yesterday if you ask me.

No. The batons are used in these situations to control or move the crowd. As well as an arrest. The gardai were advancing, it's fairly standard for police to use batons to push a crowd. Including baton charges.

He was t telling them to get back he was yelling "come on"
He wasn't moving the crowd he was hitting a cameraman first in the camera to try to break it and the on his legs
It's hard to move back when your legs are sore

No matey they were ordered to get back.

Long before that "matey" they were ordered to leave the area remember the Public Order Unit are last resort

I walked down that street around 3:00 yesterday with my young son, I saw a line of gards with batons and attack dogs(German Shepards) lined accross the street blocking people from passing, after seeing the video I am glad I got out of there fast.

His legs weren't too sore to make his way into the crowd? Do cameras not have a zoom option? No need for him to be there

I don't mind them hitting thugs who are fight them but hitting the cameramen of our national broadcaster is in xcuseable

I think you'll find the title of the thread is "RTE cameraman attacked by Gardai". So no, actually, it is precisely the issue being discussed.

Maybe if you want to talk about something else you should go make your own thread.

That doesn't matter, media or not they are not exempt from respecting the maintenance of public order.

well out of all the troublemakers he could have struck on either side, why did he pick on a neutral cameraman? should have shown a bit better judgement.

his own organisation is now getting pilloried because of it and his bosses in the Gardai could have done without another headache.

Sinn Féin again with their motion 26 & 27 on immigration into the Island of Ireland.
Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan said “we are standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity to show that there is no place in Ireland today for racism and Islamophobia. There is no place for hate.

8 votes already lost here from your motion 26-27. What a stupid lazy word to use 'Islamophobia' as if it is a phobia. It is a concern.

The anti-fascists are actually the fascists, how ironic and unnerving and also crazy. Deluded folk.

I get the Guards do a tough job but some of them are definitely just pumped up and too willing to lash out in these situations. There are people on here who would defend the Guards if they were caught on camera pistol whipping a child for robbing sweets.

The guy had a camera on his shoulder and his back to the Guard. The Guard had to break his line to get to him. He wasn't running at the cordon with a petrol bomb. There's another video of same cameraman getting a good whack across the leg.

If he had his back to the Garda, how come the camera was pointing at him?

A garda who struck an RTÉ cameraman with a baton during a rally in Dublin four years ago in what a judge described as an "unjustified act of aggression", has been given a 12-month suspended sentence.

You'd assume that's the Garda's career over anyway.

How can it take 4 years for 'justice' to be served in a straightforward case like that?

I'd imagine he'll resign before being sacked.

That's the norm, very very slow.

Does he automatically get fired for having a conviction against him? Or do they legally have to keep him employed until the outcome of an appeal?

Not a surprise though, a Garda doesnt get jailed. If it were anyone else..

If I was cynical I would suggest he probably needed another 2 or 3 years to qualify for his 20 year pension or something along those lines.

Jailed means "in jail", freedom taken away. Suspended means out of jail, full freedom.

Again, I hate to point to the obvious, it's suspended custodial sentence.

And again seen as you decided to ignore another posters question, why do you feel this man needed this and not an adult caution like anyone else would get?

Anyone else? You know this as a fact then? Can you tell me the last Guard jailed in this country for assault? Of course it happens but very few and far between.

    As for your other point:
Wow, I said im not surprised he didn't get jailed. You retort that he did, its just suspended. The two cannot co exist. Being jailed means being put behind bars and having your freedom taken away. Tonight hes a free man, not behind bars at all. In other words, not jailed. If you have a problem with that logic, then I will have to leave that with you.

Most people get Adult Cautions for first time offences. The chap is on a suspended sentence, he is not a free man as you put it. He might not be behind bars but if that fellow steps out of line that is where he will end up and quite swiftly. He has also earned himself a criminal conviction and will most likely lose his job due to this. As a 'free man' he wouldn't have these issues.

I'm not condoning the mans actions, I am interested in why there are lads going around with 200/300 convictions, yet this lad warrants a 1 year suspended custodial sentence for 1 offence!
