My favourite farm animal - I love keeping pigs (non intensive). Unfortunately OH is not as keen :(

Nope! I think it's a trait all farmers learn, sentimentality is removed from certain situations because meat is yum :D

Had the vet out the other day on an off duty call and he handled a heifer that hadn't come in heat but was almost 2 years (was one we thought could have absorbed a twin)
Nothing wrong that he could feel but said the handling could bring her into heat. Well wasn't she rising the next day on anything that'd stand for her! It was either good timing or the vet has super dooper heifer skills :D

Are they easy to get killed?

Most small abattoirs cater for pigs. You do need a pig herd number if you want to rear them. Easily got if you have a BTE or Flock number.
Last pair I got killed cost me a flat fee of €15, thereafter €15 per pig but you had to have a registered pig number - that was for quartered carcasses.
Best pork I ever ate was at a barbecue party for a ex colleague who originally came from the Philippines. Suckling pork is soo delish :D

    Yea.
    Few options around depending
If you want just pork or cured bacon, curing adds expense but worth it.

    All liscemced.

Think you mean Large White ;)

Wouldn't be Landrace instead of Large White, with those ears?

Could well be. That's what the lady said. Id say they're from crosses on both side.

GOS have floppy ears (as do Landrace) but a cross with Large Whites (pointy ears) can result with floppy eared offspring.
I've reared bonhams out of our GOS sows by our only native Irish pig breed Irish Grazers (Tamworths) which are pointy eared and the bonhams were floppy eared.
Can't post the pics of them at the moment but will post when I can.
    Feckin internet

Does anyone do the butchering themselves? Do you need a licence?

You can bring animals for your own personal consumption to an approved Dept slaughter facility. Once the animal has been slaughtered and passed by a Dept Vet then you are good to go.

You can't slaughter at home yourself?

Anyone know I what the average amount you'll pay for a hedgecutter to trim a field around 2 acres?

    Generally 40-45 an hour.
