Beginner road bike - 2016 Trek 1.1 vs. Giant Defy 4 (alternatives?)

I am a keen city cyclist and commuter but looking to take up road biking with the aim of doing a few longer cycles (for fitness/enjoying nature) and sportives down the line. Won't be racing other people so something that is comfortable, will last a few years and be tweaked (or resold) if I get more serious in time to come.

Never had a road bike before and have been talking to a few shops and the Trek 1.1. and Giant Defy 4 appear to be in my range. Does anyone have any opinions of which might be more suitable than the other? I have heard the Defy range is good comfort wise but not sure about the Trek.

I would have been of the opinion that Giant's are better value (less glamorous Taiwan brand v. USA) but the local bike shop I trust recommend the Trek more as it has better parts and wheels.

Are there any similar bikes that anyone would recommend? Keen to get it from a store in/around Dublin city centre so I can avail of BTW and easily get serviced/follow up. In and around the 800-1000 max is my budget. Thanks!
