Whoop for electrical item, you still haven't worked out what it is then?

I believe it is an all-singing, all-dancing digital jug/scales. Quite the essential kitchen must-have this season I believe :D.

    - there's more in the good list than the bad :)

    - your hair was as perfect as the rest of us given the wind/rain :D

    - you won! a prize! whoop whoop indeed!

    - you did better place wise this year than last, which means you did better than more people this year in those categories in tougher conditions = you win :p (I'm sure the grammar police will be out in in force to correct THAT sentence...)

    The Good
    • BG Jr. loving the kids 400m race and so proud of her medal.
    • Denis_B’s flapjacks, thank you Denis.
    • Age-group (16th) and F (61st) placing compared to 19th and 78th the previous year
    • Team prize, 2nd Vets team, woo hoo. Finally, a Raheny electrical item for my kitchen!
    • Nice post-race chat with boardsies and clubmates
    • Super supporters Annapr, Murph_D, Firedance, Dubgal. Thanks guys.

Trust me, if your hair was that bad aquinn would have told you. I'm surprised I didn't get a bottle of frizzease handed to me as I left

How many races is that in a month, about 5? Going to take it's toll. Seems like you just lost your mental mojo a bit for some reason. Still not a bad day at the office though all things considered and given the wind etc and a lovely kitchen prize - congrats ;)

Wise words as always. Yes 5 races in January (short, but still hard efforts). Also I know my head wasn't in the game. I just didn't want it badly enough compared to last year when sub-35 was The Mission and everything was focussed on that.

Thanks Denis, I don't know about that, but hoping Operation HTFU will help me improve my speed and develop some sort of finishing kick which is sadly lacking at the moment.

well done yesterday & prize too boot, not bad day al in all.

Thanks G, now that it's well over I'm delighted with myself and my new appliance :D. I was a bit meh about the race but there was more positives than negatives and FD rightly pointed out. Hope you're back fighting fit again ?

It’s time for Operation HTFU, and the first step will be to set benchmarks at 1 mile and 5K over the next week or two. I’ve already time trialled 3K on the track, at Alsaa which has given me a time of 12:29 to improve on.

The plan is to follow an 8 week Mile specific training plan with some modifications to include a longer LSR and a few more XC races.

Hopefully this will lead to some faster times over the shorter distances and I’ll decide then whether to keep up this sort of training for another 8 weeks or to move towards 5 mile/10K training. I have notions of trying a Graded Meet this year so will try to assess which event would be the least embarrassing and give it a go.

I’ve given up on the idea of DCM this year. I’d prefer to be ready to start XC in September/October rather than spend time tapering and recovering from a single race. Just not that into it :).

Still in recovery mode post Raheny 5 and taking a few (scheduled) days off running. Catch ya on the flipside, as BG Jr is given to say

Excellent how exciting! Will follow with interest! Great to see someone do something a bit different like this. You're right not to do the marathon unless you're 100% into it. Good luck with the new plan BG!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,009 ✭✭✭Firedance

yeah + 1 to that, I was a bit surprised when you mentioned you were opting out of DCM on Sunday but actually, you have natural talent for the short fast stuff so working specifically on that is a great idea. The best of luck, I know you will succeed & look forward to witnessing it first hand :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,447 ✭✭✭FBOT01

Raheny 5 may not have turned out the way you wanted it to but as you said plenty of positives to work with. Also when you are racing as often as you are, you are going to have the odd bad day but at least it won't be too long before you get the chance to bite back :pac::pac:

Will be watching your progress through Operation HTFU with interest over the next 8 week and beyond. Great to see you making the firm decision to focus on what you enjoy and hope you get the results that you are looking for.

Enjoy the few well earned days off.

    It’s time for Operation HTFU

Class! I've just started something similar and am soooo enjoying it :) We've got a new (extra) coach at our club who's focusing on middle distance (although he'll happily cross over to the shorter stuff <400M). Training for the national masters XC got in the way a bit in recent weeks but am just getting into the new routine now and am loving the variety. My plan is to find a distance that suits me most, whether it's 200 or a mile or anything in between is still uncertain, but at the moment I think I'm leaning towards the shorter stuff. All so new.

Beware though, you are going to be EXHAUSTED. Especially as you transition. There is nothing like a set of 150's to leave you in pieces for days. Or even 300s. During the first few weeks my recoveries were coming in at 10.10-10.20 pace. A lot of my easy runs can only be done at 9.15-9.40 ish pace still. My legs are tender for days after a session. And I'm not even following the full programme yet!

    Nonetheless - I'm loving it!

What I enjoyed (and miss) about marathon training is just that - the training. The intensity, the routine, the camaraderie. 16 weeks fully devoted to a goal. But, with this, I'm finding I'm getting all of those benefits already, but it's not all riding on one single race (which of course could go one way or another on the day). Instead I'm hoping to do Meath track races, and Leinster if my time is up to scratch. ALSAA mile. Whatever! I've no hope of winning anything this year (or ever?!) but will see how the year goes and may push it more this time next year. After the XC season of course!

Brilliant. Will be watching how you get on with great interest!

True that! I actually watched the video about the Western States 100 a while back and I couldn't wait to get out there straight away and run 100 miles :D. Same after I read Born to Run the first time, was dying to throw away my runners and head for Mexico :o. So yes, we never know what's in store but so long as we get to keep running it's all good.

Cool, that sounds like a great plan! I will be picking your brains for sure. Thanks for the heads up re. exhaustion and recovery, I know this won't be easy and I'll have to factor in reduced mileage to allow for proper recovery etc. I'm also going to get a steer on a proper S&C routine because I've really let that aspect of my training lapse recently.

    And, yes, start a log!!!!
