Problem with photos on DLNA with Horizon

Maybe I'm doing something stupid, but I can't view photos over DLNA from my UPC Horizon box. I've tried both Plex and Serviio as DLNA servers with the same results. I publish a photo folder, and can browse to it via "My Devices" on the Horizon, and can see the list of photo file names (horrible interface), but every photo I try to open comes up as a "prohibited" sign -- circle with diagonal stripe on grey background.

The photos in question are just bog standard JPGs, taken on a Canon EOS camera. They are 18 megapixels and about 5 to 6Mb in size.

Have you tried with circa 1 meg images and does that work? My first guess it's the huge images which would in no way be considered "bog standard".
