Granada - I think it's my favourite city though I was only there for 4 days. Absolutely magical place with so much to see and with incredible history, people and food.

Cork - not sure if everyone else is serious here, but I am. I've only been once as an adult and it was a flying visit - would like to go again soon as it seemed to be buzzing.

Bogota - loved it though it was a bit rough. Great nightlife and sound people.

Buenos Aires - spent 5 months there 8 years ago and LOVED it. It has the best nightlife of any city I've ever been to and if I was single, I'd have a great time with the men as they're bleedin' rides.

    Lisbon - stunning.

New York - only spent 24 hours there years ago. Dying to go again.

Berlin: the most un-German city in Germany

Las Vegas: Put on your culture blinkers and soak up the buzz. It's all about the money so if you don't gamble, then the city is there for the taking. I blew $300 in an hour and stopped gambling after that...

Barcelona: The complete city. Beach, football, history, food, sunshine, shopping, friendliness

Gothenburg: My memory is tainted by the fact that Swedish girls just seemed to fancy the pants off me. I wasn't even trying. It was my accent more so than my rugged handsomeness

Dublin: I'm from Galway and many people seem to love it here but I enjoy weekends in Dublin. It's compact but busy. It's got no more skangers than you'd get in any other major city. I was in Paris last year and was shocked and the amount of homeless. Dublin is awesome and we should be proud of it. Dublin has a vibe.

Cities that disappointed me: San Fran was filthy. Prague was full of people trying to dodgy characters including taxi drivers and bar staff.

Hong Kong. Wanted to go since I was about 3 and finally made it there for a big family holiday in 2007 and it didn't disappoint. Went just after Christmas so it was still all lit up at night. I loved every minute.

Paris. Went a couple of times as a child, and also spent my honeymoon there so it has a special place in my heart.

There's a thread on here about return flights to Hong Kong for €300 if that piques your interest.

Hanoi. Busy, dizzy, foodie, dirty, mad, traffic, chaos, bamboo, dodgy, honest, amazing smells, disgusting smells, street food, markets, oasis of calm, people bikes, lights... Would love to go back.

(sounds like I'm boasting about being "well traveled"!)

Thought Saigon/ ho chi mihn was much better.
Loved Cairo but was pre 9/11 not as friendly now but one day would love to go back.
Love Edinburgh and Florence in Europe and think European cities tend to be best.

    Florence is gorgeous.

Venice is wonderful too, just stay away from the tourist traps for food and drink and it's as cheap as anywhere.

Barcelona: Was there with my Mother for the first time last year. Loved it! So much to do. Good food. Great for shopping. Loads of culture. And you can fly there from Cork :)

London: Was born there and spent the first few years of my life there so it's special to me. Always enjoy returning. Was considering moving there for a while but don't like the idea of being broke constantly!

Glasgow: I know many people hate it but I really liked it there. Nice people and easy to get around the city.

Chania in Crete: Was there a few years ago. Fab little city.

It's pretty bad that there are a lot more cities that I would put in the "wouldn't return to list"...

    Tehran.

Just for the extremes from daily hangings to super night scene and beautiful views.

I have not been there in 10 years or so but always promised I go back someday.

Copenhagen and Stockholm were terrific cities, sadly not so now, but still worth going to.

Berlin, Cologne, London, Gothenburg, Los Angeles and Chicago. Really enjoyed all of them. I didn't get long enough in LA and Chicago so I really want to go back.

    Manchester - Love that place.

Valletta was beautiful & if I won the lotto I'd head back to Paris for a weekend

Krakow - Went in early December around six years ago. Went with the missus for the Christmas Market which was great but the city had a great vibe about it. It was very reasonable to eat out and we stayed in an excellent five star hotel. Was only there for a couple of days so didn't get to see everything I wanted. Will definitely head back.

New York - It's New York, the place is epic and you can't help but have a good time. Especially if you are a movie buff like me :) So much to see and so much still to see. Will definitely be heading back here at some stage.

Barcelona - One of the perfect European cities, great sights, great food, great wine and SUNSHINE :)

Rome - The eternal city. One of the most alive places I have ever experience in the world. This is my favourite city to visit.

Bordeaux - Great and beautiful city to visit with the added bonus of great wine and the ability to take a few vineyard trips into the mix :)

    Most disappointing -

Boston - I just found it drab and boring. Maybe I didn't get to see the best sights but compared to other US cities I'd been to it was nothing special. Only one place was worse.

LA Suburbs - I was over in the suburbs of LA years ago when the job I was in sent me to the US head office. One of the most depressing places I'd ever visited. It was my first trip to the states and the excitement of that was soon knocked out of me by this bland experience.

Munich - Went with work a week after Oktoberfest. That could be colouring my disappointment :D

Kathmandu. Words can never express the magic I felt while I was there. Ancient and cultural beyond belief. Honourable mentions go to Tallinn, Berlin and well thats it really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,252 ✭✭✭FTA69

Like the above poster I'd have to say Kathmandu. The place is utterly amazing, largest Hindu and Buddhist temples in the world. Absolutely stunning architecture, culture and history and the rest; only a couple of days hike away from the Kathmandu Valley and the base of the Himalayas. Despite being full of tourists there is very little tack and the people are laid back and sound.

Barcelona and Bilbao. Love Barcelona, cannot fathom the complaints about it. Bilbao is magnificent, the Basques are an amazing people and like us in many different ways. Nightlife, food and joints aplenty.

Athens. Cheap as chips, amazing food. Nightlife is cracking and you're at the centre of the ferry network so umpteen travel options available.

Eassouira and Chefchaouen in Morocco. More towns than cities but wonderfully laid back, stunningly scenic and not nearly as much hassle as you get in the bigger cities. I go to one of them every year.

Amsterdam. Still my favourite European capital. Rent a bike and cycle out of the city, within an hour you can be flying past lavender and tulip fields and windmills. Also great for getting off your box.

    Melbourne

Sports mad, big city, but everything within walking distance. Weather's not bad either...

Went around this time of year 6 years ago, and would love to head back some time

I went to Boston for Paddy's weekend a couple of years ago. I'd go back for that weekend in a heartbeat. Fantastic weekend!

Paris is my favourite city, I will go back there again, and again, and again, and when I grow up I'd like to live there for a year in a beautiful old apartment near Notre Dame overlooking the Seine.

Galway. Any weekend at all. Just love the place.

There are very few places I wouldn't return to, but at the same time, if I'm going somewhere I'd like to see somewhere new, so for that reason I probably won't return to them all.

Dublin. The best city in the world

Madrid - Did my Erasmus there and loved it.

Seville - A lovely city, great vibe to the place and more relaxed than other big Spanish cities.

Rio de Janeiro - So much going on, so much fun, lovely people, dying to go back.

Toronto - Although it's been ages since I was there and I was only a teen on holiday with my ma, I think I'd really enjoy it to go back as an adult. There was so much to do there.

London - Probably the most interesting city I've ever been to.

Vancouver - gateway to Vancouver island and the mountains. Damn expensive though.

Bergen - again the location and what is on it's doorstep

Stockholm/Helsinki - take ferry trip between the two. Might not bring the kids though as they probably don't want to see ship full of drunken Finns. :D

South Island NZ - I suppose I can't count Queenstown and Wanaka as cities.

Sydney - just spend more time by the pool on the roof of the Holiday Inn in The Rocks staring at that view.

I am not allowed discuss …

Hanoi...loved it, so much going on and a bit different (unlike HCMC which could have been any European city).
    San Fran...great buzz.
    Rio De Janeiro - wow

Dublin - Not a Dub myself but I just love it. Lived there for many years. Had to move for my job, but counting down the days until I can get back! It's a city in which you can feel very comfortable and it really does have a nice vibe.

Brugge/Bruges, the most gorgeously romantic city in the world. Magic at any time of year.

    Brugge/Bruges

Strasbourg, although most people associate it with the parliament, is a close second. I'd particularly recommend going there for the Christmas market.

    Strasbourg

Walking around the streets of the Dorsoduro area of Venice was easily the best part of Venice. Complete peace and calm. Stay away from San Marco/St Marks and base yourself in one of the other four quieter areas on this map.

Budapest was very enjoyable and not at all as shifty as I'd have thought beforehand, was only there for 3 days but there was a good vibe about the place, seemed to have character. Didn't scratch the surface with regards going to see things but the castle was very nice and provided a good day for what we did see. The thermal baths probably aren't for everyone but found them to be very relaxing.

New York- I have to go back to this city as many times as I can afford in my lifetime. It's a pity that hotels are so expensive though.

Berlin- Great city, great nightlife, surprisingly cheap. So much culture and interesting places.

Lisbon- Beautiful architecture, weather and food. Another pretty cheap city too.

Kandy- mad, loud, crazy, hot, smelly and compact. Beautiful surroundings, amazing train journey to get there and the most amazing botanic gardens I have ever seen.

Another shout for Lisbon. Great city and the near perfect climate there helps too.

Portland, Or. Not too big, not too small, good public transport, great food, amazing beers, close to several ski resorts, great for biking in the summer, surrounded by a rainforest, woodlands, mountains and picturesque little towns, it's really pretty.

Lisbon. I end up visiting for work and pleasure several times per year most years. Love Portuguese food, the city is beautiful, it's pretty inexpensive compared to other western European capitals and the people are fantastic. The city is beautiful to boot. And the areas around Lisbon like Sintra and Cascais are great for day trips. I've considered moving there full-time more than once.

Galway. Just because it's possibly the most fun, laid back place on the planet. Fell in love on my first visit and was lucky enough to live there for a year for part of my postgraduate studies.

Granada, one side of my family are from just outside the city so it's practically home for me so I'm biased but I love it. As comfortable as a pair of old slippers to me. The best Tapas culture in Spain by a long way the food is outrageous and stupidly cheap. Walking down the middle of the city's main streets under a canopy of trees on a hot day before diving down a side street, picking one of the countless squares and deciding on a restaurant to have a coffee in on a spring afternoon is one of my favourite things ever. I never need to be prompted to visit my grandparents, I'll always find reasons to go home for a few days to visit the city.

Cochin, Kerlite food is easily the best in India and the Fort Cochin area is probably the best place to eat in all of south Asia for my money.
