No GPU or do you have one already?

I picked up a GTX 750 just before christmas, going to use that until the new GPUs are released in summer.

Such a nice feeling ordering PC parts :D

    i5 6400 & Z170 Gaming K6 arrived already. XFX XTR 750W, Corsair 600C, h100i GTX and 16gb DDR4 vengance 2400mhz all ordered.

Looking forward to building this when they all arrive.

Apparently OC will blocked on non K version of the cpu. I would not update bios if you want to OC this chip.

I ordered new parts as well today, but I'm sticking with S1150 for now, Skylake only really makes sense if upgrading from 1st gen i5/i7/i3. Though arguably, X99 makes far more sense in that scenario given that games are now finally starting to shift towards multiple cores and threads. Fallout 4 is a great example, performs excellently on i7 systems versus i5. I'm confident that I will skip skylake entirely, may go x99 but happy enough with 1150 for now.

I ordered 2400mhz ddr3 as well though. Interestingly enough, Fallout 4 is one of the first games I've seen as well that actually has significant performance gains with 2400mhz vs 1600mhz. i5 vs i7 and 1600 vs 2400mhz both have significant differences, and when you combine i7 2400mhz against i5 1600mhz, there's a very large gap. Which has been largely unseen until now.

I disagreed, I went from the 920 to 4790k. The stuff's just far more reliable than the new silly generation imo.

Well in fairness, I'm jumping from an FX6300 build so I think going to skylake makes sense :pac:

He's right - Asrock were the first to jump on the bandwagon and made it official with the SKY OC 'feature' as they were calling it. They've since backtracked because of Intel being unhappy (probably at the lost revenue) and just about every trace of SKY OC has been removed from their website. The BIOS versions are still there though.

It seems like Intel are going to strong arm all the motherboard manufacturers to issue a bios fix.

Lads, any recommendations as to a better router than the standard UPC (or Virgin) offering of a Cisco EPC3925? At the moment I'm torrenting and playing online no problem, but it seems the throughput of the torrent (downloading at high speeds and from 70 or more seeders) is choking my connection and no other devices can connect to the wifi, let alone use it.

Not looking to spend big money, just wondering if this is a problem 50 to 70 euros can fix?

What speed connection do you have? Manually limit the download speed and see if that fixes it. Alsowworth ringing upc to check your connection and speeds. They can reset it remotely too.

I have a 120mb down and 12 mb up connection. I don't get that through my home plugs though (understandably), so I'm not eating through all my bandwidth. I think it has to do with all the torrent connections, not the actual speed.

Predictable of Intel - can't fight the Streisand effect though!

Lads I have a gigabyte gtx 970 and want to set up dual monitors. Just wondering if I should use dvi-d or dvi-i for the second monitor or if either is fine? Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,710 ✭✭✭Monotype

DVI-I just has a digital and analogue signal in the one connection. I'd assume that it's a digital signal that you'd want to use so, no, it would make no difference whether you use DVI-D or DVI-I.

    350 for me now!

Its cheaper than some of the 390x's now. Nice card and slightly stronger than a 390x too for stuff above 1080p i think

Just a note for anyone that might be interested. Recently posted a question about using 6 pin to 8 pin VGA adapters because my PSU only had 6 pin connectors available and graphics card needed 8 pin connectors.

I ended up buying the connectors but after installing the graphics card I got a few BSODs while gaming complaining about the atixxx driver. For safety I went out and purchased a new PSU and it hasn't been an issue since.

It may have been completely unrelated but I haven't had one since I upgraded and it might be worth considering just buying a new PSU from the off if someone finds themselves in a similar situation in future.

i want this onluy think i don't like are the legs of the desk they look very cheep

The legs are iron, not plastic. Lian Li have an infamous disdain for plastic :p

Still fail if you like legroom. The width of a PCI bracket and mobo means that either your hands are too high or you legs are crushed. Desk PCs look amazing but are impractical unless you have a thick + thin design.

Anyone use any HDD activity tools? Windows perf monitor is pretty basic.

I assume a few of you are familiar with virtualisation. I'm trying to set up a virtual machine for work but haven't gotten anything working quite right.

Background info: In my job I have the option to work from home. To do this, I need to download the work-supplied VPN client and connect to their VPN. This works fine as long as I am not connected over RDP. If the VPN connection is initiated from an RDP connection it will disconnect me from the VPN so RDP is not an option. I want to run the VM fullscreen 2560x1440, with the possibility of doing this on two monitors.
    • I have a server running unRAID 6 with KVM hypervisor. I have a windows 7 VM running on here that has the VPN installed, however the only option I have here is to connect via VNC which is bollocks in itself. To make matters worse I usually end up connecting via RDP to my work laptop from the VM. The lag is real, and it doesn't help that the server is basic (Dual core G1610T).
    • From Windows 8.1 Microsoft included Hyper-V as part of Windows. I decided to give this a try to improve performance and ideally avoid the VNC connection altogether (launch via hyper-v console). I could not get Windows 7 to boot up whether by converting the KVM .img to to .vhdx, or creating a whole new VM and starting from scratch.
    • I created a whole new 8.1 VM which will boot successfully. However - I then learned that Hyper-V console has a resolution limit of 1920x1080 and cannot be increased unless you connect via RDP - So we're back to the RDP issue I described above (I haven't tried, but it seems like a safe assumption).

Anyone have other suggestions that I can look into? Seems like VirtualBox is the only option here, as VMware don't offer free type-2 hypervisors. I thought Player was free but it seems there is only an option for a trial now.

Edit: Nevermind the VPN connects successfully on the Hyper-V VM! :D

The upgrade with VM was painful. It took 2 calls and 2 live chats to get it sorted.
    But worth it now :)

I had to endure 6 months of sh!t speeds a couple of years ago but got changed onto a different node to fix it.Since then i always get slightly higher than advertised speeds.

I'm touching wood while typing just in case it goes t!ts up :p

I got in touch to inquire about pricing for the 360mb package, I'm always eager to be on the latest and greatest speeds.

Option a) I'd be forced onto a new package, that would increase my current monthly price from 445 to €95
Option b) I could move to a phone and BB package for €60 a month, but pay a €200 cancellation fee for the Tv. The TV, that I got offered for free, don't pay for, and I'm moving packages within a single company. Thankfully the Irish twitter support acknowledged this was a ludicrous thing to be offered to an existing customer.

Incredibly frustrating how there is just no upgrade options. Literally none. I'm getting the impression they want to try get me off my current offer, which was provided by UPC end of last year with the last price hike.

I haven't received any notice that my current package is subject to the price increase, if it was I'd be on looking to see what offers I could get. While it's by far the best internet provision in the country, I'm starting to become concerned at how they are utilizing this semi-monopoly to their advantage, in terms of gouging extra fees from customers.
