Ah here, in defence of aquinn... Her relaxed approach to racing seems to be working well for her

Thanks Anna and in my defence we were only 3 minutes behind BG expected arrival time!
Huh M. I think you should try that swim in the Bay after all.

    In BG's defence there's nothing wrong with being 'a bit',early :D

my lack of a suitable warm up had nothing to do with aquinn's driving which, of course, is perfection itself (FBOT, would you have me go to future races by public transport ?!?).

    Saturday – Tempo

This was supposed to be a hills session in the Phoenix Park but the ground was frozen and coach figured it would be too risky to do that route (Munich Mile, I assume) as a couple of runners from other clubs had taken tumbles already on the uneven surface. So the new plan was for 3 x 2.5Km loops on grass with 1 min recoveries after a warm up. I had to bail after 2 reps for parental duty but was delighted with the pace and the consistency given the terrain. Heard later they all did hill sprints too. Actually would have been handy to get those done, instead of sitting in a freezing warehouse watching BG Jr. practice handstands .
    • 5 miles incl 2 x 2.5K loop (11:25, 11:26) 7:18 min/mile (grass)

    Sunday – LSR

Junior parkrun to start the day. That’s 1.2 miles I can’t log in good faith because BG Jr. likes to take time to admire the scenery and at some points we were, literally, going backwards as she stopped to collect vital pieces of nature or insist on a snack.

Headed to the Phoenix Park after lunch, needing to do 11.5 to bring the weekly miles up to a nice round total. Did a mash up of the Jingle Bells, 10 mile and half routes starting and finishing at the Visitors Centre. Perfect running weather with little or no breeze. Stopped to chat to a friend with about a mile to go and realised it was actually pretty cold when not moving. Tried to get a coffee to warm up in the Visitors Centre café but the queue was doubled back almost out the door so went local instead.

    Monday – Easy

Loop of the ‘hood with aquinn. Abandoned her to do hill sprints then home with 1 minute to spare before storytime.

    Tuesday – 3K TT

As part of my upcoming Go Faster campaign aka Operation HTFU, I thought it would be a good idea to put some benchmarks down in the target distances, namely 1 mile and 3K. The winter track series in Alsaa is perfect for this, alternating miles and 3K on a monthly basis until April.

I was delayed getting away yesterday evening so didn’t have much time for a warm up. Got a couple of laps done anyway before lining up behind my BHAA rival who seems to be going from strength to strength, despite being 3 age groups ahead of me . She started strongly from the gun so I had a feeling that if I focussed on keeping up with her while checking the splits the timekeeper was calling out I would hopefully end up on target (<12:40 was the aim). Conditions were good: cold but no wind or rain, and even though the track has lost its bounce and there’s a few lumps gone out of the outer lanes it’s still a good surface to run on. I checked the watch after the first 200m then didn’t look at it again except for the Km splits as they beeped. Happy with the first split at 4:07 as well under target and feeling good. 2nd split not so much as we were slowing but still under target on average. Dug in for the final 2.5 laps and just focussed on keeping up with my (friendly!) rival. Any attempts I made to overtake were seen and raised so I decided to leave it until the last bend. Ha! She took off like a rocket and left me for dust. Legend! Put me back in my box anyway. Delighted with that result off no specific training. A 14 second PB for me and reasonably consistent splits. Need to work on the middle Km. And my sprint finish (or more accurately the lack thereof). It was definitely an advantage to have someone that bit faster to pace myself off, but I still had to do the running so I’ll take it! Will see how the next 8 weeks’ training goes before setting a target for the next one in March.
    • 4.4 miles incl. 3K TT (track)

    12:29 (Km splits 4:08, 4:14, 4:07). 2nd F. New PB :D

Wednesday – S&C, Medium Long Run

Level 2 Pilates, then a semi-naked run around Raheny via the promenade. I had the watch on but left it covered up with the jacket. It was beeping away with the splits and I thought I must be flying until I realised I’d left in in Km mode .
    • 8.5 miles @ 9:13 (grass, path)

    Thursday - REST

After 9 consecutive days’ running I’m looking forward to this.

Hope for us all! The BHAA is full of runners in their 60s and beyond who put people half their age to shame. I hope to go out in a blaze of glory at 80 :D

    Friday – Easy

A handy few miles in the evening with aquinn. Was busy this morning so didn’t get my usual Pilates/run combo done but did manage a very nice fancy lunch.
    • 6.4 miles (path, grass)

    Saturday – Easy + strides

Got out just before dark for this and unusually enough had the wind in my face for the first couple of miles along the promendade, then at my back all the way home. Wheeeeeeeeee !

Sunday – National Masters XC, Dundalk

Well, this was fun! I was looking forward to this all week but a bit nervous at the same time. I mean it was nationals. NATIONALS. NATIONALS .I thought I’d hit the big time a couple of weeks back with the Dublin Masters but this was going to be a step up again. I had no expectations beyond aiming to do better than I did in Raheny. Not in terms of position, because the standard was bound to be higher, but just to feel like I didn’t leave anything out there and to maybe start a bit more aggressively.

Our club had organised a coach to take us to Dundalk I.T. and it was great to just relax rather than negotiate the M1 and find parking etc. We arrived in plenty of time (this always makes me happy :)) and had several team discussions about shoe choice, spike lengths, outfit, accessories and so on. Settled on the 12mm’s after asking a junior runner covered in muck who had a medal around her neck and she said ‘the longer the better’ with a vaguely haunted look on her face.

There was a massive crowd for the Masters events, with 196 women and a dozen or so M65’s contesting the first of the adult races. The start line was really well organised, with plenty of room, so no lounging at the back of the pack this time. I had my toe to the line along with another teammate and the entire start was only 3 rows deep. Bang! We’re off and I made sure to go out hard and wait until I could see through the throng and get some space before settling into a pace.

Probably about 500m into it I eased back slightly and was overtaken by a few but not as many as I’d have expected. The effort felt right and the ground, while mucky, wasn’t as bad as I’d feared. Our club seemed to have supporters at every turn (and it was a very twisty course!), and of course Firedance who looked fresh as a daisy after yesterday’s 20 mile run was cheering a few boardsies on as well as her clubmates.

I could hear the lap bell long before reaching it and the (loud!) commentary was all about the battle among the top 3: Pauline Curley, Annette Kealy and the eventual winner Anna Sadowska. It sounded epic, and provided a great distraction from my own running.

One lap to go and the course was getting muckier but I still felt ok, good even, and wasn’t breathing too heavily. I was moving as fast as I could but it was like my lungs were way ahead of my legs which just couldn’t keep up. I had a few mini battles with other runners on the second lap and even though my watch says I was slower on the second lap I don’t think I conceded too many places and may even have gained some. Finally the finish line was in sight. Of course there was an ankle-deep muddy section to get through before the final sprint for the line. No drama here, couldn’t catch the runner ahead but no late challengers from behind either.

Congratulations to Dubgal on another amazing performance, Aquinn who had a strong race (& got some great photos to prove it!), HelenAnne and MarthaStew and a big thanks to FD again for the amazing support.

I’m delighted with today. It was definitely a better performance than St.Anne’s (even though I enjoyed that too). Only 3 more XC races left this season I think – 2 Meet & Trains and 1 BHAA. I feel early onset withdrawal symptoms coming on.

Did you see her bouncing across the field after too? And still smiling??!! Fantastic run, well done and congrats on the 3000m PB.

don't forget, Garmins not v reliable on switchy backy courses, it will usually plot the shortest route so the course won't have been too short, if any. Most likely measured with a wheel. Just saying :D

I know, and I wouldn't normally pay too much attention to the course length in XC, I just don't think yesterday's muck was conducive to me finally stringing a series of sub 4 min Km's together :o.
