    Well now....

To play the xylophone is impressive.

To play the xylophone with two hammers per hand is VERY impressive.

To do all of the above, when you're deaf, just blows my mind.

    That girl is fkn brilliant!

    But back to Bowie :D

Hopefully we don't get any more sad music news for a long time. Here is some of the music programming on BBC Four this weekend (all subject to change). New Brian Pern, a short series about Music Moguls and we welcome Top of The Pops to 1981 with two different episodes!

    Thursday

    7.30pm & 11.30pm Top of The Pops 1981 #1
Richard Skinner presents an episode of the music series from 1981, featuring songs from Adam & the Ants, the Specials, the Nolans, the Look, Chas and Dave, the Beat, Matchbox, Racey, and a performance by Legs & Co

10pm & 2.10am Brian Pern: 45 Years of Prog and Roll New!
New series. The spoof documentary following the adventures of an ageing rock star returns. Brian has recovered from his heart attack and is ready to make a big comeback, with a new album and appearances on Desert Island Discs and at the Isle of Wight Festival lined up. He allows a film crew to document his return to the limelight, but also unwisely hands over management to his new wife (Suranne Jones), who books him on a convention cruise run by the annoying president of his fan club

    Friday

    7.30pm & 12.30am Top of The Pops 1981 #2
A 1981 edition, in which Peter Powell introduces performances by the Look, Spandau Ballet, XTC, Adam and the Ants, Bad Manners and Blondie

9pm One Hit Wonders at the BBC
Compilation of hits by artists that were hardly heard from again after one of their songs climbed to the pinnacle of pop, alongside an analysis of the `one-hit wonder' phenomenon. Featuring Peter Sarstedt's 1969 track Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)?, Trio's 1982 smash Da Da Da, Move Closer, by Phyllis Nelson, and You Get What You Give, by New Radicals

10pm & 1.10am Music Moguls: Masters of Pop new!
New Series Part 1 of 3 Money Makers: The secret history of pop and rock from the men and women who pull the strings behind the scenes. The first of three programmes tells the story of the maverick managers who controlled the careers of major artists, from Colonel Tom Parker (Elvis) up to Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber). Along the way are tales of industry legends such as Led Zeppelin's Peter Grant, and Don Arden, who managed the Small Faces, Black Sabbath and ELO. Contributors include Andrew Loog Oldham, Jon Landau, Bill Curbishley, Paul McGuinness and Jonathan Dickins

    11pm & 2.10am Pop Charts Britannia: 60 Years of the Top 10
The evolution of feelings and attitudes toward the British singles chart. Documenting changes from the 1952 NME countdown via Pick and Top of the Pops through to the Radio 1 chart show of today

    Saturday

10.40pm Music Moguls: Masters of Pop
    Repeat

11.40pm One Hit Wonders at the BBC
    Repeat

12.40am Danny Baker's Great Album Showdown
Rock: In a celebration of the analogue vinyl LP, the presenter and contributors including Martin Freeman and Boy George choose their favourite records of yesteryear from different genres, beginning with rock. In the first edition, Danny is joined by broadcaster Jeremy Clarkson, former Smiths producer Stephen Street and writer Kate Mossman. As well as selecting their most-loved albums of the 1960s and 70s, they discuss how the LPs of those years were produced and enjoyed in comparison to their modern equivalents

    1.45am Top of The Pops 1981 #1
    Repeat

    2.25am Top of The Pops 1981 #2
    Repeat

    3.05am Sounds of The Eighties
Showcasing a selection of pop music performances from the BBC archives spanning the decade, including Adam and the Ants, Duran Duran, Culture Club, ABC, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Bananarama and Kylie Minogue

    1.30pm David Bowie: A tribute
2pm Video Killed the Radio Star (Making of Bowie's videos)

Whoever has the right to Labyrinth needs to get their finger out. Also on Sky Arts is a new documentary on Glen Campbell and his epic final tour undertaken while battling Alzheimers Disease [Glen Campbell: I'll be me - Sat 6.50pm]

Another Bowie BBC thing - I saw this on tvcream.co.uk this week. I really enjoyed the video - he plays along with the audience very well. Mad to think the performance never made it to TOTP ...
The late eighties were perhaps not Bowie's greatest era, with even the great man himself admitting Never Let Me Down was "an awful album". Indeed he even suffered the indignity of being bumped off Top of the Pops, as after coming into the studio for the first time in a decade to record a performance of the song Time Will Crawl for a forthcoming episode, the single stubbornly failed to rise any higher than number 33, and then promptly fell back down the chart, so Pops' rules at the time meant they simply never showed it and hardly anyone even knew about it until the Beeb unearthed it for their Eighties compilation on New Year's Eve 1989.

It's not perhaps entirely fair on Dame David because around the same time his old sparring partner Mick Jagger filmed a performance of Let's Work which was an enormous flop and after sitting on it for ages expecting it to be a hit, they eventually showed while it was at number 41, but we suppose you have to admire a show so powerful at the time it could tell David Bowie to bugger off. Anyway, we all get to see it now, and not just the whole performance but also the stuff before and after the recording, including Dame David going into the audience, and getting a great reception.

And it shouldn't be forgotten that Da Da Da was on the minds of the folks at Ariston and Aardman Animations when these ads was created... :D:);)

(Of course, an even more famous Ariston ad came along a few years later - but it's not relevant here.)

Loved it, that Black and White Night Concert is great. The story of Roy recording an album in secret after the deaths of his wife and kids was heartbreaking. It was thought to have been lost, was recently rediscovered and was released in December

Lemmy: In His Own Words is available on iPlayer from today (January 22) at 9pm and is comprised of archive footage from BBC interviews and live performances.

Footage from the documentary has been taken from previous BBC series including I'm In A Rock 'N' Roll Band and Heavy Metal Britannia plus live performances including Motörhead appearances on Later...With Jools Holland, The Young Ones and Top of the Pops.

Hmmm, I'm not keen on these iPlayer only shows (which we can't legally watch over here). It'll probably appear on BBC Four sooner or later.
