I think i get what your saying but games like SOR and Street Fighter 2 have gone down in history as not only being good beat em up's or fighting games but Just great games. To have the ability to play a great port of an instant arcade classic back in the early 90's was a major thing especially for younger kids who couldn't hang out in arcades much. While Double Dragon is certainly more retro than SOR, each game has different things to offer and thus appreciate. Retro to me is about enjoyment of playing games i love and also picking up the games you could not get originally: the thrill of the hunt is there too... Street Fighter 1 is another story...:)

i think u are hitting the nail on the head with your reply. one word in your quote that i seem to relate SFII and SOR is the word classic. and yes they are very enjoyable. still dont think they are retro though lol.

probs a little off topic here questioning what a game should be determined on whether retro, classic or just plain ****e. enjoying it though :)

    Master of the Universe

first played this in the piero is dun laoghaire. there use to be a que for it and it was 20p a go. then later on got it on the snes. thought it was brilliant at the time. but i may argue to say its not retro enough to have its full week of respect.

If you can reference paying for an arcade game in 20p coins I think it's old enough to call retro ;)

This was a beast of a game! Played it back in the day on my SNES. ^_^ Never had my own copy though, borrowed a friends at the time!

I do remember I got a loan of a Snes Action Replay for use with SF2 back in the day. The code I used is still etched in my memory - 7EOC 6001 - it made the game very fast (faster than Turbo), and there were others like altered colours, special moves in the air etc. Good times :)

There's a code on the snes version of turbo you can use during startup to set 10 star speed turbo(default is 4 I think), it's hidden in the menu :)

Must have been mad to play the original sped up, going back to it these days I find it insanely slow.

It's still a great game, often play it with my brother after a few beers.

I think you are slightly missing the point of the thread Retro.
And yes, that's a point for another thread.
It's been discussed at length in the past, but those threads are probably themselves Retro at this point ;)
I'll start a new thread on the topic and folk can debate there.

Down, R, Up, L, Y, B - same as the champion edition colours for the original Snes SF2 :)

Merits mention as to how pivotal those hacks were in the course of the series. Capcom were happy to move straight from Champion Edition to Super until it was discovered how popular these sped-up pirate cabinets turned out to be, and thus Turbo was born and slotted in accordingly. It certainly goes ways to explaining how much of a step back Super seemed after Turbo, in terms of gameplay.

It did, in turn, give rise to the need for the now illustrious Super Turbo. While Super Turbo is utterly broken in single player, its reputation as the tournament version of Street Fighter II is relatively untouched. Even with Hyper Street Fighter II and Super Turbo: HD Remix, the EVO crowd always end up returning to Super Turbo barebones.

I remember Doom saying on the podcast that turbo was itself a hack job. There's no new art or animations, every new move recycles or recolours assets already in the game.

I must confess, and don't tell anyone, that I prefer The Last Blade 2 and Pocket Fighter, just don't tell the others, OK?

Now, how do you send this as a PM?

I think a lot of the later SNK games out did what Capcom was doing. Last Blade 2, Samurai Showdown 2 and the better King of Fighters games like 97 I feel are much better games, even if KoF can be tough to learn.

Have that game (Capcom Fighting Jam) somewhere in my backlog, should probably root it out.

Worst port of Street Fighter II?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,120 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

From my own experience, probably the original GameBoy one. It looked alright, given the limitations of the hardware, but going from 6 buttons down to two really limited it too much. The strange roster (a middle ground between II and II CE) probably didn't help either.

so who was everyones preferred character in Streetfighter? I always used Blanka, mostly because of his easy to pull off special moves. It was the same in Mortal Kombat, Raiden was basically the same character, so I went with him.

Plus, Blanka's strong punch and jumping kick always felt pretty good to deliver to your opponent

It was cool to play against someone who had mastered the likes of Zangief, of the Indian dude who's name escapes me, dalziam or something

I was always a Ken/Ryu player...I'm decent with the others but if I'm trying to 1cc or anything, then definitely one of the shoto's

I was never great, but used to flit between Guile, Chun Li and Vega

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Guile for me. He had some great counter moves, like the reverse spin kick and great from a distance with the spinning bare knuckle. Good to counter tricky wall jumpers like Chun Li with the flash kick.

I used to get pummelled in this game at the arcades. Had to wait ages then knew no moves and got slaughtered. Went back to playing Hunchback....*sadface*

On the Snes i faired a bit better, used to pick Vega as well for some reason or Eddie Honda

As much as I love the C64, that has the worst port imo!

I remember playing it in the arcades with one of those hacks that Ryu/Ken could do about 3 layers of fireballs. Was pretty mad to watch at the time.

My first encounter with SFII was my friend's brothers "normal" copy. I loved it, but wasn't much good at it. It took me forever to master the special moves. Later, he got the Turbo edition and when I got a SNES I would borrow that copy quite often. At first I thought the full speed (7 stars?) was way too fast but once I got used to it I couldn't go back.

To try and improve my skill I would cycle through disabling the heavy, medium and light kicks and punches in order to force me to learn a fighter's full range of moves but truth be told once I turned them all back on I went back to using the heavy kick and punch almost exclusively (the L and R buttons were so satisfying to press).

Eventually, when I had enough money, 30 quid if I recall, I went and bought Super SFII in HMV on Grafton Street. It didn't have the same range of speed options though and the new characters though mostly well designed (I couldn't stand T-Hawk) only muddied the experience without quite freshening it enough.

For me, the Turbo edition will always be the best. Everything about it, from the graphics, the sound, the speed, the controls, even the pause button "theme" just felt right. SFII is a zen like experience in terms of how well balanced the characters are and I always felt the computer "AI" did a great job of being just unpredictable enough to provide me with a continual challenge. A true classic that resulted in some of my fondest gaming memories.

Picked these up sometime around the mid 90's I think. Figured I could try learn some of the fancier combos etc. Nope. :o

I never got it, I suppose as a solo gamer I didn't get the attraction of multiplayer games, and that has persisted until the present day.
I can still play any given fighting game for a few rounds before the computer opponent kicks my ass and I give up.
Only The Last Blade, its sequel and Samurai Shodown were different.

Was that the one in the Savoy by any chance?

No, it was down here in East Cork. Small place, long gone now.

Speaking of which, we should do Doom for the next one. John Romero just this week released a new Doom level which pretty crazy.
