So I'm currently in the market for a new car and I have found a really nice 09 lexus is250 with 90k km for in and around my budget I'm really smitten with it but have a nagging voice in my head telling me that I should go for a cheaper branded car that would be newer, for example I could get a 12 focus or golf with the same km's for around the same money. Can anyone help me with my conundrum? Is age just a number and the mileage the one that counts? Thanks in advance for any replies!

I'm really in the humour for chips, but I'll go buy an orange.

You really are not comparing like for like.

What do you want from the car? Is250 is a different car and in a different ballpark to the standard golf,or,focus, unless you have forgot to add the relevant GTi and RS from your post?

I'd expect the Lexus to have potentially less issues than either the golf or focus, if it's been looked after that is. Also it's either 80 or 88k is a major service for the IS, so make sure that's done. They're an exceptionally reliable car.

As the song says "Let it go". FFS some ye are worse for harping on about it.

Make sure you get the SE-L version, it comes highly recommended by some other boardsie who has one.

    :pac:

Hmm I seem to have stumbled/started a thread that brings up some bad memories,, sorry for that. Anyway thanks for the replies, I do realise that I'm not comparing like for like but that was sort of my question, would you take an older Lexus over a newer standard focus or golf, on the grounds of reliability and possible resale value. Thanks again and I suppose the choice is mine at the end of the day!

If you are thinking on an IS250 you probably wouldn't really be happy in a Focus/Golf.

When you are trying to build up enough speed in your 1.4 Focus to overtake something and an IS250 flys by the both of you, you'll think to yourself 'I wish I got the Lexus'!

Note: I've never driven a 1.4 Focus, but folk on here mention there slowness regularly.

I always tend to go for the older, higher class of a car instead of a newer model of a class below. That's not for everyone though so it's your call. I never had a Lexus of any description but I would have it over a golf or a focus at the same price
