Nursing in Ireland

    Hi all,

    Apologies if this has been asked before. I've tried searching for a similar topic but couldn't find one - I'm on my phone so maybe I missed it!

    I have a diploma in nursing in England, and I've been qualified 3 years, currently working as a junior sister on a ward.

    England only recently changed nursing to degree only course, while nursing in Ireland has been degree for donkeys years.

    Can I register in Ireland as a nurse with a diploma? I had a look on he nursing board site, and couldn't see anything about level of qualification and the site is down at the moment to re check.

    Also, has anyone worked both in Ireland and the U.K.? Is it quite similar or vastly different (aside from the whole NHS being free part!)

    Hi, check with An Bord Altranais regarding the qualification. I work in a public HSE hospital (not as a nurse). It's similar in structure to an NHS hospital. They are poorly funded with long waiting lists and busy EDs. Good career structure with pension/union etc. Lots of our nurses have worked or trained in the UK. The private hospitals are a bit different- they are run as a business so have a different feel from management, although they look smarter.
