Advice on attic insulation job in progress.

I'm having extra attic insulation put in at the minute. The deal was that an extra 8" would be added, the existing floor area would be raised to accomodate this, and the insulation would be laid cross batten.

Day 1 is complete, and I have a few issues.

It is a bungalow roofspace and the centre third is floored with t&g boards. The workmen have laid the insulation in that floored section in line with the old insulation rather than cross batten. They said that because of the raising of the floor and the fact that the floor is t&g rather than plain square edge boards they had to go the same direction.

The second issue is that the floor has only been raised by about 4". So if they have laid 8" then it is being heavily compressed. Surely this defeats the purpose?

Next question, what should I do??? Do I tell them to down tools at this stage? I'm waiting for their boss to arrive on site at the minute.

sounds a bit lazy...speak to the gaffer - confirm you're not happy. this sound sliek something they should have pre-warned you of when quoting...

you pay the bills (both theirs, and heating later) not them. it's not in their incentive to do a thermally good job - it's only in their incentive to get off site as quick as possible with the minimum of work and materials

Who prepared the plans and spec?
Who is supervising and certifiying the works?

Or is it another case of just let the builder in and do what he thinks best?

if the wind from the eave vents is let pass under the cross battened insulation then u have wasted the money as outlined above,
retro roof insulation work with rolls of insulation is one of the hardest jobs to get right, even worse with hip roofs

Spoke to the insulation boss. All problems addressed. The work is being redone. Floor is being raised further to solve the compression and the top layer is turning cross batten.
