Thanks diego! Wow that sounds like a fantastic thing to be a part of. I look forward to reading all about your training this year and can't wait to read the report of the Run the Ring :)

Hopefully so and sorry for spamming your log with what looks to me like an ad for a race. I have no affiliation with the event but have been reading the race blurb too much methinks!!

    Yes mammy :p:p

Nah seriously, great stuff... Big congrats, sounds like you nailed it and got the inner voice exactly right. And interesting reflections on the difference being part of a team makes, even in an individual sport.

So do you have to wash organic Angus manure off you now??? :D

God no, don't apologise for that, sounds great and loved reading about it...and your enthusiasm. Just caught up on your log, you actually completed the 30 day challenge, fair play! You are doing everything right and deserve to improve in leaps and bounds huge strides this year. Well done on the 10k Pb!

Haha, not been paying attention tang?! YOU can call me whatever you want. I can call MYSELF whatever I want...officially labelling a whole gender cohort of athletics requires a bit more thought and consensual agreement ;):p

Aw that's really kind Denis, thanks!

Just got official team breakdown in.
Y'know what I said, about every place counting?? Well if I hadn't caught AM today, I'd be flashing a silver instead of team gold, ouchers.
Two seconds were in it. We got 12 points, Parnell got 13...and same for men: BR12, Parnell 13.
The better news is that first to fourth today on the women's team will be representing Sli Cualann and Wicklow county at the nationals masters XC in three weeks. Strong team...

Also forgot to thank Ashford for hosting a seamless event right down to the portaloos. Probably didn't want us polluting the organic land with our unorganic wee :D

DG, my heart is swelling with pride and there's a tear in my eye from reading your report. Massive congrats on your individual and team result, you showed true grit, determination and raced smart. I've only watched XC so I don't know how tough it is but I can imagine, that is some result and so well deserved - you really are an inspiration and an amazing mentor. I was reading faster and faster as you were digging deeper and deeper :)

I want to thank you for what you said about your team mates and the true spirit of being in a team. This forum needs more of that positivity and encouragement - you've made me want to put my runners on and get straight out there and run fast (even though I've just come in from a run).

I've never been on a running team but I adventure in a team with three smashing guys and though I'm always slowing them down they encourage me, give me great tips and feedback and they praise me when it's due. This makes me want to train harder and harder so that I can keep up with them and won't let them down. That's what being on a team is all about and we're a team here on boards, no matter where anybody is in the field, whether they finish on the podium, middle or back of the pack - they're out there doing their dam hardest and most likely giving it 100% for where they are at this point in time and that deserves encouragement ad praise of the highest order.

Awesome haul of medals, you should be very proud :)

Congrats once again on another great result.
    Dubgal72 wrote: »
I cannot praise the concept of team highly enough. The tangible, physical benefits are there, sure. The intangible, mental benefits are huge. Running is well and good. Training is well and good. If you haven't got the mental package, you may as well go home. Team bolsters the mental delivery and while we probably would have gone and run today anyway, the concept of 'team' shores up mental resolve and brings you closer to 'can' and further away from 'can't'.

We should encourage team participation at all levels. Running has become a very individual sport. 'Me against the clock'. I would like to see more 'catching the wo/man ahead, every place counts'. Perhaps we can get something like that going here? Cross country training and racing makes the strongest road and track runners. Team spirit and camaraderie is a very significant part of that physical and mental strength.

Just on the subject of team, i got a book at xmas called "The way of the runner" by Adharanand Finn, its about the author living and running in Japan but its mainly about the Ekiden, which are long distance relay races in Japan. The book gives an insight into Japanese running culture which has a big emphasis on the team been more important than the individual. Its a good read so far, i just thought that it might be something that you would be interested in.

Thanks Jake. Definitely. He's the same guy ran with the Kenyans? I'd say this venture is just as interesting. The Japanese psyche is a whole other ball game, isn't it? A remote friend spent a few years in Japan training to a very high level at karate. He wrote a book about his 'terrible experience' but all the time I was shouting at the book 'you're not even trying to view the Japanese outside your own national lens'.

log week beg Mon 4th Jan 2016

    Mon rest.
Would have loved a leg shake out, actually needed it but no go...

    Tue
Plan had one hour easy but cut run short to make it 50 mins as foot started to niggle significantly enough.

    Wed
Very active morning, about five miles walking (not being logged ) and a few miles running incl two quite steady :o

    Thur
    20 min steady tempo followed by 400, 300, 200 @ 5k pace, 45 sec rec.
Yesterday's running (couldn't be helped) meant this session was nearly postponed til Friday. I chilled and heated my foot in the morning and completed the full hip flexor stretching routine plus myrtl before heading out. 5k warm up, very easy, was followed by strides and a few drills.

My knee had loosened out fully but the foot was 'there'. Effort levels rose too high around half way and my foot just felt off. In the last half mile or so, my right bum ached, not sore, more like fatigue and I just felt like I was lumping around. Not great but just felt everything was tight and heavy. Probably didn't help that I had a Thai massage yesterday, although this one was completely relaxing compared to previous ones! My lower back/hip is tight all the time now which must be pulling muscles everywhere. Pool and gym followed by Osteo tomorrow and if that is no good, chiro next week. €€€€

    Fri
    9am start at pool
    for 45 min session:
10 min warm up followed by
3x (90 sec, 60 sec and 40 secs hard w/45 sec rec) 3 mins between sets
And 6x20 secs sprints to finish off
5 mins or so warm down

    Then up to gym for
General stretching incl lots of hip flexor stretching after the pool

    3 sets of:

10 reps squats using 2x5kg weights
12 reps high row on 15kg resistance
10 reps deadlift using 16kg kettlebell

    3 sets of:
8 reps pistol squats on trx apparatus
10 reps calf raises on light resistance
8 reps glute/ham raises using weight thingy on pelvis

    3 sets of:
    Plank 30 secs each. Ugh
    Supermans, 12 each side
And a few cobras to finish off

All (untimed today) recoveries were spent stretching. Anyone reading know if this is an ok idea?

Finished with thorough stretching of all used body parts :)

    Quick shower and dash to...

    Osteopath visit
It's been a long time since I had any osteopath treatment, just before and after the birth of my last child so definitely pre-running. BG and Paula Radcliffe (one directly and one more remotely...through her book :D ) persuaded me to try an osteopath treatment for running maintenance. My lower back on the right hand side has been very tense lately and deep tissue massage or even manipulation in the area hasn't lasted because I think 'the architecture' is pulling the tissue back to a tension nearly straight away.
I brought my son to this osteopath after he was born but apart from that, had no experience of her apart from people generally raving about her.

    She. Is. Magic.

She specialises in cranial osteopathy and after starting at the base of my skull, told me that she was going to focus on my head for a few minutes. After some gentle pressure on the side of my head, she moved towards my ears...all well and good until manipulation started in my outer ear canal  She then started to pull gently but firmly on my ears and after a moment of this asked me if I have problems with my right ear. Pause while I attempted to snap out of the dreamy state of relaxation this ear pulling had induced and answered 'yes, actually, I'm very deaf in that ear'. 'Ah' she said, 'yes, it's a lot tighter than the other side'.

It's not actual deafness, more that I can't process more than one sound at a time as those of you who have ever run on the road with me will know...'sorry, just moving to my good side' :)
She theorised that the knock on the head that brought on the deafness has dislodged some part of the ear's mechanisms and that today's treatment might even see some improvement. Interesting....

Anyway, the next part of treatment involved her sliding her hand under my bum and pulsating my sacrum lightly. I know, I crossed all sorts of personal space boundaries today!
This part of my spine and hip had been niggling uncomfortably while lying flat and all I wanted to do was raise my knees to alleviate the discomfort. No chance now!

Anyway, during the whole 55 minutes, I drifted off several times, despite workmen occasionally stomping in and out, banging doors and drilling very loudly. Sitting up, my back already felt a lot looser and this evening, feels completely free. Hopefully this will continue to be the case but am very happy and very impressed. And very relaxed :D:D

Foot has also calmed down, ready for the weekend's work but that is more down to a day's rest from pounding and also doing plenty of stretching.

Awesome, delighted you found the treatment good . Hopefully the benefits will be seen all the way down the chain to your foot.

    But D?

Am not one for fitting in so will be grand. There will be no short shorts for sure. Might show off my calves but that's it.

Also spotted myself on the XC you tube clip. The camera really does add 10 lbs so that's the focus!
