Timmy was an essential part of the fab five.
    Anne was totally dispensable however.

Well she was a bit of a drip but she always remembered to pack the sandwiches and the potted meat. They would have all starved without her.

The other symbol I think of when I think of the number 4...

This is the one I use because the more common form is too closed off and unwelcoming, and too similar to 9.

    Fire, Earth, Air and Water?
    Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer?

(Some good generic song lyric filler there)

    Isn't IIII also acceptable?

Sorry but here comes the boring stuff.

IV is correct but IIII is used on clock/watch faces for balance and symmetry.
Divide a watch face vertically and exactly 14 Roman characters appear on each side of the dial (left & right). If IV is used, it disrupts the perfect symmetry of the dial.

    OK. Done.

    Carry on....

Some clocks which use roman numerals use IIII, though outside of this I don't think it's commonly used.

    Edit: balls, beaten to it

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I worked for an accountant and trying to figure out his 4 from his 9 was a nightmare.

    Your honour.

If you use a dancer's clock to save money on characters you can use & as shorthand for "and" to represent 4.

    "& 5 6 7 8"
