Bringing a car back to Ireland from Australia

    I was wondering if there is anybody on here who knows about the ins and outs of bringing a car back to Ireland from Australia.

    My understanding is you can bring a car back to Ireland, VRT free, if you have been a resident in Australia and you have owned the car for 6 months or 1 year I'm not sure which?

    I think there are also other restrictions or requirements also but I'm not sure of them all, does anybody know or have gone through this process before?

    What type of car is it? I would imagine it would be worth more in the Australian market than it would in Ireland, especially if it is a big engined petrol. I know there is a huge discrepancy between the price of what I drive in Ireland and Australia, this may or may not be the case with yours. You could sell it and buy same car in Ireland or UK if it's available and pocket the change. Shipping fees will be steep but you will be VRT exempt I believe

    ,VRT free but as it's coming from outside the EU, you will have to pay VAT. That plus individualised shipping would, I imagine, make it very expensive.

    The annual motor tax amount on it could make it very hard to ever sell on if its a large engine.

    Op, you may be exempt from VRT but you will still be liable for VAT and import taxes as the car is coming from outside the EU.

    Going by the links sent by the member visa vat is also not chargeable if you have been resident for over 12 months outside the EU.
