Lovely 60k with my son today. Garristown, Balrath, Kentstown, Tea and rasher croissants with the Faceless Monk in Bective abbey before heading back to Garristown via Dunsany and Tara...

52kms this morning from Greystones to Dun Laoghaire and back. Think I may be finally over the man flu! Beautiful morning for a spin although I got a fright somewhere around Shankill when both wheels slid however I somehow managed to stay up! Good to be back on the bike!

104km today. First 60km more or less into the wind and last 45 km with it. Was told before going out at half 10 that it'd be great if I was back before half 2!!
No rain for the first time in ages and first long spin in a while too.
Also made it home on time and a nice freshly made bowl of soup and a sandwich waiting :)
I have 35km left to ride to break the 4000km for the year

Had a notion of going early but the bed was lovely and warm and the road outside was not. Went off after 11 for a leisurely 76 km, flat as a pancake. It was a good bit warmer then. Longwood, Rathmolyon, Summerhill, Dunboyne, Cartron House, Maynooth, Kilcock, Enfield.
Sunshine, virtually no breeze, almost perfect for this time of year.

A very pleasant 26k up Stocking Lane past the viewing point (420m climb) then back down a slightly scary descent down Piperstown Rd into Tallaght and back home by Ballyboden - very enjoyable, and great to burn off a few of the Christmas calories.

Looking a bit wet tomorrow, so might leave it till Tuesday to get out again - I saw the Kippure ariel in the distance today, wonder if I could make it up there?

Lanzarote last 2 days. Like the best
Irish summer's day. Lava fields, volcanos etc :-) and the strongest wind I've ever been out in :-(

You'd make the climb, but its due to be very windy over the next few days. Kippure is very exposed and a dodgy descent in the wind. Maybe save it for a better day.

    This x3

Kippure is the only hard climb I've ever enjoyed more than the ensuing descent; Windy steep uneven, gravel strewn, potholed with relatively frequent pedestrian traffic and did I mention steep?

Doable but does not need additional danger sauce like High winds, rain, mud or ice.

@Smacl are you back to the height of your powers?

+1 on all the above. It's also bloody cold up there. You might also want to save your lowest gear for the last two corners ;)

Finally got on the road at 12.20 yesterday so decided on a magical mystery tour.Out to Bray then up to Kilmolin from the N11,at the roundabout, nice gentle climbing however lost it on a descent into Enniskerry (golden gates junction?)luckily for me there was nothing oncoming.....
Got a PB on the Poggio, then joined up with an Orwell Lady across the Scalp, nice chat before veering back down to Shankill and onwards to Killiney and over to Blackrock,Seapoint arriving in a traffic jammmed DunLaoire, momentum killer.
Dalkey and back up Killiney Hill then enjoyed the descent homewards.

Enjoyable spin and great to see loads out enjoying the break in the weather.

Fitness is truly woeful and weight is up a few kg but grand outside of that, and thanks for asking. Must organise a Christmas / New year boards recovery spin for January spin at some point, or maybe tag on to one of the audax 100k intros.

Thanks for the advice. It was starting to get quite windy and cold on the short stretch of the Featherbeds before I turned back down Piperstown, so maybe I'd be hold off on Kippure for a more settled day.

Passed 10,000km for the year today.

Won't have as much freedom next year due to a job change. I'll be down to weekends and Summer evening cycles. Ah well, it was good while it lasted.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,925 ✭✭✭RainyDay

Well, I got to the gate of Kippure, but I was very glad I took the advice not to go up. The wind across the Featherbeds was pretty rough, and in my face most of the time. I turned down into Glencree, and had a great plan of coasting all the way home downhill from Enniskerry. However, in the real world, it's not really downhill, and has a fair few ups and downs, so it's not really until Sandyford that you get a clear downhill run. I died a bit on the homeward stretch, and even had to use the granny ring for the little hill up into my estate - a new low for me - but great to burn off a few more calories again.

decided to see if the road from seapoint to donabate was passable. big mistake. path had to be walked and even still the gusting couldbhave easily taken me into the sea!

Out in what seemed like reasonable conditions early in the morning but big mistake on my part when trying to avoid flooded roads I ended up facing into a strong headwind for 22km on the way home.

Have to say it was the hardest spin home I have done but still came in at a 26km/h average.

Me too! A very windy 41km around Howth got me there. Gonna take the rest if the year off.

In the height of summer I sometime commute via that route but even then most of it has to be walked with wet feet. (Also, that green stuff, which covers the surface when the tide is out, is excessively slippery).

3/4 of the spin seemed to be into a headwind but got home just before it turned really nasty. more than likely last day on the bike for 2015.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,975 ✭✭✭aFlabbyPanda

So I got home OK last night and thought I'd be OK this morning. Carrigrohane road had signs saying it was flooded but "sure I'm a cyclist, I'll be fine on the footpath!" and off I headed through.

What a gowl, when is was below the rims I was fine but when it started to go above the BB I realised I may have underestimated the situation. Dismounted and had a soggy trudge through...

Did the Oldcastle off road spin, very nice route although lots of branches, tress and flooding thanks to Frank..
    75 km after 2 puntures
Finished for 2015 now as boss working tomorrow
13,200km in total though was off road for feb and most of march

110 door to door. Rathfarnum to Dunlavin.
Wind and rain on way out, sunshine and tailwind home and good company. Great day on a bike. Only a measly 5000km for me but beats 3000km of last year.
    Happy new year.

Thought I knew the back roads of NCD and South Meath but that was before I joined Swords CC. Recognised about half a dozen landmarks (mainly pubs) on the way to and from Tara but the roads all seemed new. Great day to be out with only one spell of rain somewhere near Hollystown.
112k in 4:25' bringing me to 4,800k for the year. Happy with that but it seems like a spin to the shops compared with WA's 19,853k ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,265 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

Just a tidy up spin of 22km today to bring me to 4000km for the year, not too bad considering I was off the bike from February to June with a fractured pelvis. Came back fighting though :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,239 ✭✭✭✭dahat

Roads are pretty bad wbere i live so ended jp doing the same spin as the other day but no headwind of note this time.

I met a few roads which were deepish in water and duly got my feet soaked which wasn't ideal on a coldish day.

57 KM with an average of 27.2km/h. Juat started cycling late in the year so didn't even make 800km but next year im well prepared to get stuck into it.

    Aim for 2016 is 4500km.

112km with 1000m of up for me today to finish off the year one flood and dirty roads only made the coffee taste better.

Strava is showing 4,800km I forgot the Garmin for the Gorey and a fews other bogie uploads over the year so over the 5K km total for the year, stay save and heathy guys and gals best wishes for 2016

You can imagine the chaos on those back roads the rare occasions JW isn't with us. We usually get lost and end up eating at a filling station. Great to have you with us again and great to see the Boards kit in action throughout the winter. Yours was probably the last sighting for 2015! :)

A quick 38km spin to get me over the 4500km for 2015. Wasn't easy after a night shift but glad I got there. Original target was 4000km, so happy days. Good luck to all for 2016, stay safe etc

Up earlier tomorrow to try and beat the rain...
