My trusty Vu Duo is starting to show its age and is begining to creak under the strain I'm putting it under.
I'm going to be in the market for a replacement soon and am wondering whats the current top performer?
Requirements for me would be gigabit LAN and hardware transcoding to lighten the load on my own LAN.
It will be used as main TV sat box and as a headend for a couple of Kodi boxes.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, before I plod on and blow my my money ;)

I assume you've put on the latest images and all that jazz?

Personally I've an Ultimo, Solo2 and have tried the new Uno, I use the Solo2 as my main box and it's rock solid, I started to push it a bit, have DreamPlex on it and it's rock solid, I've toyed with Kodi as well and it seemed fine as well with that but I didn't do much with it. My setup has a 1Tb hard-drive in it, a 16gb USB key and it's hooked up to a gibabit home plug, it's rock solid, can't fault it at all.

Download the IPK from here, copy that to the TMP directory on the box and then do a manual install. Go into the program and you'll see the setup options, I just put in my log in details and server IP (wanted to keep it local rather than DNS) and it's working perfectly. My litmus test is whether the wife can use it and she can so happy out

I am a geek though and spent weeks setting up my Plex server, by the time I got around to setting up the box it was a small thing to do.

I've a 12TB server running a few different processes as well as a 6TB NAS also (don't bother putting Plex on a NAS by the way, cr@p performance)

It's going to have to be on whenever you want to access it so you'll be best to leave it running as a service in the background

is there a good cheap box that can also stream plex to a bedroom

Probably the easiest thing to do would be to get a Google Chromecast and use that to access the plex, otherwise I guess a VU Uno would be a good option, I'm probably going to get rid of the Gigablue in my bedroom and replace it with an Uno in the new year for accessing the plex.

Should have added, I use the Gigablue mainly for kids TV and just have a playlist setup off a network share, my eldest (3) has noticed that it's the same thing over and over again and is starting to complain, be easier to do it on the plex

Yep, have it running latest vix at the moment.
    Usually it's that or OpenPli.
I am running a swap file and cache flush but to be honest the lack of RAM on the box is really starting to show.
I used to run Project Valerie on my Duo as my main media manager but now I have everything moved over to Kodi on a shield.
My main aim is a smooth and fast twin tuner with good processor for hw transcoding.

I am kind of been drawn to the Mutant hd2400 or Xtrend ET10000 but I am open to suggestions

Agree with Stan here the et8000 does seem to be a great value for money box and always gets consistently good reviews.

I was looking at it but went with the Mutant HD2400 as it has HW transcoding which I need for streaming outside my LAN.

Now to sell my trusty Vu Duo!

I have set up a couple of ET8000's for a couple of lads I know and I have tested the streaming outside their lan's and it has worked without any problems on sd channels. Hd can be a bit hit and miss but if you are transcoding its not hd anyway. Both boxes are in Dublin using upc broadband.

I bought a Vu Duo2 last year because it had transcoding and I stream out from it fairly regularly but I have the transcoding setup for the equivalent of a sd channel and don't usually have any drop outs.

Another lad I know has an old DM800 clone and he streams it into his job onto a cheap android box using Dreamdroid and he thinks its great. From what I can see if you have a good upload speed on your broadband then not having transcoding isn't a major problem.

The ET8000 does everything that the Duo2 does bar the transcoding and is probably the best value for money linux box I've seen (I did spend €420 on an Azbox Premium Plus that never progressed much with Enigma2, usable but can be a pain with random crashes).

The Mutant looks good and is €329 on Ac Sat Corner for 2xDVB S2 and 1xDVB C/T2 vs €259 for the Et8000 with the same tuners and €239 on Satshop.tv.

Ac Sat Corner is exactly who I went with, €16 p&p on top. saved@ €50 versus the WOS price for the same config.

I'd advise anyone buying a receiver to buy in euro at the moment like you did ,sterling is just too strong to get value.

Mutant has built in hardware transcoding, it can take 4 tuners vs 3 on the ET8000 and also has a hdmi in port.

I haven't got a Mutant but from the specs they seem fairly similar apart from the above

100% agreed, Sterling is way too high to get value at the moment unless you have some stockpiled ;) .

Hardware Transcoding and Gigabit LAN are my 2 main needs and the Mutant ticks both those boxes.

The W.O.S price inluding Delivery was £287.95 which paypal was kicking out as €405.96! Might have saved a few euro on a revulot card but I haven't got one.
I bought from Ac Sat corner via Amazon.de and total including delivery came to €354.99, a €50 saving.
Unless you have a stockpile of sterling at the moment the value isnt there.
