Do you have a full licence? Any driving experience as a named driver?

Turning 17, aka has never driven before as it's impossible.

Standard insurance quote for a 17 year old on a civic is €hahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahahahha

    What year is it?

If it's older than a 2000 then you can forget about IMO.

I know lads who were insured on Civics with provisional licences but this 15 year old rule will pretty much make it impossible.

Probably about 4 times the worth of the car. If you can even find someone to insure it.

Only way around this op if you get a policy on a less risky car type and have open cover then drive civic.

I can't see you personally getting your own policy on a civic especially over 15 years old.

Named driver may work but as said a lot of companies are now not covering older cars.

Open drive these days mostly only covers drivers over 25 with a full licence.

I would have to say money probably couldn't buy this any more.

There's only 2 companies at the moment not insuring cars over 15 years.

The rest are putting loadings on these cars. 17 + provisional licence + old car + high risk car = good luck.

What insurance companies would cover me as under a named driver

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,877 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

17 year old male, Honda Civic and car over 10 years old? Bring a jar of lube with you OP.

BTW insurance companies are getting more and more wise these days to parents taking out a policy on another car to add their kids as a named driver for cheaper insurance when in fact the child is the main driver. This is known as fronting. They just load whoever is the highest risk driver on the policy to mitigate against it.

Probably not what you want to hear but your better off getting a car that has a lesser profile with insurance companies. Honda Civics or the likes of Golfs, Boras or Passats are very popular with young lads and as such insurance companies load them.

Being a named driver on your own car won't make a bit of difference these days.

Firstly, you are talking about driving other cars, not open drive.

Most insurers won't give driving other cars to anyone under 25.

That, coupled with the fact that DoC specifically excludes cars owned by the policy holder means its a total non runner.

You can try contact as many insurers as you can find, brokers as well, but honestly it's more than likely none of them will touch you. Even as a named driver, they're dead wide now to young lads with high risk cars going as named driver to try save a few quid.

Hence why the car is put in other family members name.

I am just putting all above out there.

Me years ago as a named driver on a primera 1.6 quoted €6000.

I would have rarely got to use the car.

Got a micra and paid double cost of car on insurance.

This was with a full licence.

Driving of other cars only applies to the policy holder. Named drivers cannot use it.

I've seen this many times on the Cars and Parts for sale Facebook page... Young lads are getting policies on parents' names and then they think driving of other cars applies to them

    Named drivers dont get DoC.

    You took the correct option.

I swear, the sense of entitlement that so many young people have nowadays with relation to driving is staggering.

Im 17 with no experience but I want to drive a Civic, a Golf, a Bora but I want it as cheap as possible, even if that means defrauding the insurance company and lying on proposal forms.

First time drivers can get on the road cheaper than ever with the likes of Boxymo and other tailored products for high risk drivers but even thats not good enough for alot of them.

Believe me I know how it works.

I started in a sh1tbox and worked my way up.

I would be shocked to see a 17 yo get insurance on a civic.

Its an ek2 not an ek4. EK4's is an sir civic which if you quoted that model there would be no hope in hell insuring it at 17.

The 1.4 one should be fine. Try munster group. They were the best for me for insuring my dc5 by a mile

If it was originally a 1.6 vtec and has the engine changed to a 1.4, it's still a SiR or type r on the insurance database.

    Its not an ek4 laaaad.

An ek4 is an ek shape civic with a 1.6 VTEC B16 engine which you havent a hope of insuring

An ek2 is an ek shape civic with the 1.4 D13 engine.

Please feel free to share this nugget of knowledge with all of your wannabe "laaaaad" mates.

    EK2 is 1.3

    EJ9 is 1.4

    The hatches go like this:

    EJ9 (1.4L SOHC model),
    EK1 (1.5L SOHC VTEC-E model),
    EK2 (1.3L model),
    EK3 (1.5L SOHC VTEC-E model),
EK4 (Japanese SiR, European SiR and/or VTi),
    EK6 (Japanese 1.6L SOHC model),
    EK7 (Japanese 1.6L SOHC model),
    EK9 (Japanese Type R).
